Obituary
MADISON - Mary Louise Moffatt, age 88, of Madison, passed away on Sunday, October 5, 2025. She was born on October 27, 1936, in Tunnel Hill, Ill., the daughter of Paul and Marjorie (Hargis) Brooks.
Mary graduated from Manual High School in Peoria, Ill., where she participated in a singing group called the Stephen Foster Singers. She was united in marriage to Alan Moffatt on May 20, 1956, in Peoria. Mary was employed at Central Wisconsin Center for over 20 years and for the State of Wisconsin in various UW departments until her retirement. She also worked evening shifts for Covance.
Mary enjoyed quilting and being outside, fishing and tending to her flower and vegetable gardens. She enjoyed singing and was a member of the Monona Senior Choir and she loved going to her work out class at MSCR. Mary was a woman of strong faith. Sunday mornings were for watching services at Bethel Lutheran Church and singing joyfully and loudly to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Mary loved to travel and had been all across the United States, Japan and the Netherlands. She and her sister enjoyed taking month long trips to Canada every year, where they would fish and drink Bailey’s on the deck. Mary also loved following her grandchildren around the United States while they played football for UW-Madison and Minnesota State University in Mankato. Any time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her immense joy.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Kimberlee (Tim) Verhage and Susan (Ron) Bernhagen; grandsons, Paul (Rachel Williams) Bernhagen, Joshua (Emma) Bernhagen, Zach (Amanda) Verhage and Sam Verhage; granddaughter, Emilee Verhage; great-grandchildren, Vayda Verhage and Macklin Verhage; sister, Carolyn (Art) Hagel; nieces, Linda, Kathy, and Allison; and is further survived by her many grand nieces and nephews, and her beloved dog, Peanut. She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Marjorie; husband, Alan; and daughter, Jennifer Moffatt.
A celebration of life will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Monday, October 27, 2025.
