Obituary

CROSS PLAINS - Richard Lee Stayner, age 69, of Cross Plains, passed away at home, surrounded by his family, following a valiant battle against lung cancer on Wednesday, October 1, 2025. He was born on September 8, 1956, in Charles City, Iowa, the son and youngest child of Raymond and Alice (Duesenberg) Stayner.

Richard graduated from Rudd, Rockford, Marble Rock High School and received his degree in Industrial Mechanics from MATC. He met the love of his life, Joanie Meier, in November of 1984 and they were together for 43 years.

Richard worked as a maintenance supervisor for Tekni-plex for 33 years, up until his passing. He loved his job and the people that he had the opportunity to work with. He will be fondly remembered for his humor and jokester personality. One of the passions in life amongst many others was playing the bass guitar. He had the opportunity to play with a few bands in the Madison area, which was one of the many highlights of his life until his family came along.

Richard was an antique tractor enthusiast, especially antique steam tractors and trains and he enjoyed going to the Badger Steam and Gas Engine Show. On Labor Day weekend, his family would gather together at the Cedar Valley Engine Club in Charles City, Iowa. He and his family were long-standing members of the club. He was also a talented woodworker and created many treasured pieces.

Richard is survived by his loving wife, Joanie Meier; son, Christopher Stayner; daughters, Samantha Jo (Brett) Liddicoat, Rhonda Holtz and Brittany Schmidt; his grandchildren, Olivia, Bentley and Madison Holtz, and Kaden and Danika Schmidt; along with his siblings, Bonnie (Kent) Mason, Dean (Debbie) Stayner, Diana Stayner and Nancy Weide. He also had many nieces and nephews. He had fond memories of Samantha Sletten and her girls, River, Rikki and Rylee, along with Karsten Wagner-Davis, Courtney and children, Apryl, Freya, Tj and Axel. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Alice.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family for a fund to be established for some of Richard's favorite charities. A special thank you to Agrace HospiceCare for all their loving care to Richard and his family.
