Obituary

CROSS PLAINS - David D. Statz, age 69, of Cross Plains, passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at UW Hospital due to a tractor accident while taking care of the land he loved, which originally belonged to his Keller grandparents. He was born on October 13, 1955, in Madison, the son of DuWayne and Loretta (Keller) Statz.

Dave graduated from Mount Horeb High School in 1973. He married Joann Sutter on October 21, 1989, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Cross Plains. He worked as an electrician for Baltes and joined the Electrical union, finishing his career at Electric Construction. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and Sons of the American Legion in Cross Plains.

Dave enjoyed watching old Western movies and shows. He was one of the “Good Guys”. He smiled easily, and enjoyed meals with friends and going up north and camping.

If you went to see Dave to help him or visit, it takes 10 minutes, but plan for an hour. He had many lifelong friends. Dave was a quick-witted storyteller, always ready with a joke. He would always say, “Once a Bluffer, always a Bluffer.

Dave had a vast knowledge of family history and was able to recall family ancestry. He loved talking sports with his sons, UW Basketball, Brewers (his favorite player being Robin Yount), and his favorite team, Notre Dame. Being a great dad, he thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his sons.

Dave and his family enjoyed trips up North, going to South Bend to watch Notre Dame football games with his sons, to Brewers training camp and the Grand Canyon in Arizona, many Brewers games, and a family road trip to Gulf Shores, Alabama.

Dave is survived by his wife of 35 years, Joann Statz; and his pride and joy, sons, Andrew Statz and Jeremy Statz; sisters, Elizabeth “Lisa” Dye Boening (Andre Boening) and Jeanne Statz; brother, Mark Statz; brothers-in-law, Chris Sutter and Eric (Veronica) Sutter; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, father and mother-in-law, Russell and Lynne Sutter; and brothers-in-law, Stephan Sutter and Jeff Dye.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. MARY'S OF PINE BLUFF CATHOLIC CHURCH, 3673 County Road P, Cross Plains, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, with Father Michael Wanta presiding. Visitation will be held at the church from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, and at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Wednesday.

Dave, my heart belongs to you forever. Every moment spent with you is a moment I will treasure.

Dave, Thinking all the way back to the 60s (as far back as we can remember anyways) and through recent times, it was always great to see you during our family’s summer vacation (and a few cold winter ones, too) in Wisconsin: the Keller reunions and anniversaries; working on the farm; stick ball late in the evening with the neighbors under the glow of the barn lamps, and, afterwards, piling into the back of the truck under a full moon to drive up into the hills for some adventure; movies in West Towne; lunches and dinners in Mt Horeb and Madison. Time has gone by too fast. We’ll really miss seeing you, listening to your stories, and hearing your wonderful, gentle laugh. Joann, Andrew and Jeremy, We are so sorry for your loss. Dave was such a great man. ---- Dave’s Cousins, the Vargas’ (Paul, Phil, Dwight, Greg, Mel, Jennifer, Ray and Jim)
