November 02, 1936 - September 14, 2025
Obituary
STOUGHTON - Roger H. Stoeckmann, 88, of Stoughton, Wis., passed away on September 14, 2025, with his son by his side. He was born on November 2, 1936, in Merrill, Wis., to the late Albert and Grace Stoeckmann. Roger graduated from Eagle River High School in 1954. He married Carol Ann Miller on Sept. 3, 1960, in Madison.
Roger proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for 43 years, retiring with the rank of master sergeant. During his career, he was stationed at multiple locations, starting with his first duty assignment at Ben Guerir Air Base, Baudette Air Force Station, Minnesota; Truax Air Force Base, Madison, Wis.; K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base, Michigan; Yokota Air Force Base, Japan, and retiring from active duty at Duluth Air Force Base, Minnesota, in 1979. He served in Vietnam at Phu Cat Air Base from May 1967 to April 1968.
After retiring from active duty in the Air Force in 1979, Roger settled in McFarland to raise his family and continued his Air Force service as the civilian chief of police for the 440th Airlift Wing in Milwaukee until his retirement in 1998. He then dedicated his time caring for his loving wife of 61 years, Carol Stoeckmann, who was terminal with cancer and preceded his death in 2021. They were both active members of McFarland Lutheran Church and coordinated the funeral program for many years, always adding to the menu his signature baked beans. Roger was an avid gardener, known for his delicious cherry tomatoes and cucumber pickles, and a skilled woodworker who found inspiration in nature, including detailed wood duck carvings. His creations brought joy to his family and friends and were a testament to his love for the outdoors. He leaves his legacy and love of the outdoors to both his children and grandchildren.
Roger loved hunting, fishing, cooking, and caring for his beloved animals. He also spent many hours at the Stoughton Senior Center, where he brought joy to many.
Roger is survived by his daughter, Joanie (Buddy) Smith of Plano, Texas and son, Randy (Liz) Stoeckmann of Hudson, Wis.; four grandchildren, Josh (Lauren), Christopher, Sam and Grace; great-grandchild, Mason (Josh and Lauren). He was preceded in death by his parents; and six siblings, George, Helen, Ruth, Harold, Dorothy and Robert.
