Obituary

MADISON - Mark Dyer Johnson, age 75, of Madison, passed away on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at Meriter Hospital. He was born on May 27, 1950, in Madison, the son of Forest and Doris (Dyer) Johnson.

Mark graduated from Mount Horeb High School in 1968. While in high school, though not a team standout, Mark loved playing team sports and was on the high school football, basketball and baseball teams all four years. As a senior Mark was the school's Cardinal Highlights sports reporter. He also played the sousaphone in the high school band all four years.

After high school Mark went to MATC, worked at Janlin Plastics then Rayovac, and last worked at Eggum & Johnson Lumber Company.

Mark and his fiancée, Mary, loved the town of Mount Horeb. They bought a home in Mount Horeb, and were avid golfers and bowlers on leagues at the Norsk Golf Bowl. A promising life together was tragically cut short by a vehicle accident in which Mary died, and Mark was left with severe and permanent mental and physical injuries.

Mark is survived by his sister, Anne (William K.) Johnson Wheeler; brothers, Fred Johnson and Ted Johnson; and five nephews and two nieces and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, Forest and Doris; and fiancée, Mary Beth Mayefski.

Mark was my neighbor for many years and it was a joy to know Mark. He played baseball with my first husband and was so bashful when he brought, for the first time, his beloved Mary to the home talent games. Everyone loved Mark for his wit and his kindness. After his loss of Mary and his injuries he came back to our neighborhood and lived with his parents and as his condition declined we watched his Dad push him up and down the sidewalk. It was a labor of love but after awhile it was no longer possible and Mark sorta disappeared from our lives. It was such a treat to know Mark. I am so sorry for your loss. Dina Stoenner

Mark and Mary were our partners in our couples’ bowling league at the time of the terrible accident. They were soon to be married. They were good together. Makes us sad to remember. Ken & Anna Lee Landen
