Obituary

TOWN OF GRANT - Gregory W. Dahl, age 69, died surrounded by family on September 10, 2025, due to complications of multi-dementia. Greg was born on May 9, 1956, in Waukesha, WI, to Arthur and Margaret (Koski) Dahl. He graduated from Mukwonago High School in 1974 and received a B.S. degree in wildlife management from UW-Stevens Point in 1978. He married Sharon Schwab on August 16, 1987, and settled in the Portage County Town of Grant.

Greg began his 31-year career with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources as a Wildlife Assistant in Rock County, WI. He would advance through the ranks as Wildlife Technician, Wildlife Biologist, and eventually Area Wildlife Supervisor, overseeing several wildlife areas in Central Wisconsin, including the Buena Vista. He also supported law enforcement for 10 years as a Special Conservation Warden. During his career, he received several leadership awards and was known for his deft equipment operation and technical knowledge.

Following his retirement in 2010, Greg worked part-time at the Town of Grant Transfer Station.  He also volunteered for several conservation organizations: Dane County Conservation League, serving as its president for four years, the North Central Conservancy Trust, and the Wisconsin Prairie Chicken Festival. For Clean Green Action he built a Little Free Library located at the Wisconsin Rapids Community Garden.

Greg was an avid angler, hunter, and trapper. He particularly enjoyed trout fishing in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, game hunting in Central Wisconsin and the western U.S., and waterfowl hunting with his beloved black labs. He was an eagle-eyed bird watcher and traveled throughout the Americas to marvel at the remarkable diversity of animal and plant life. As a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Master Bird-Bander, he assisted with migratory bird research. He loved his vegetable garden, puttering in his workshop, cutting and splitting wood, and taking long walks through the prairies he spent 30 years lovingly restoring at home. Prior to his illness, he could build or fix anything, loved puzzles, and was a master at black-belt Sudoku.

Greg was kind, generous, and known for his quiet wit and focused demeanor. He was a devoted husband and father, whether this meant attending a music performance, traveling to cheer at a regatta, or packing the truck for family trips to the U.P.

Survivors include: his wife, Sharon; daughter, Savanna Dahl (David Koser); sister, Vicki Eckroth; nieces, Kathryn (Benjamin) Liesch and Kimberly (Nick) Ruggieri; nephew, Wilhelm Eckroth; grand-niece, Liesl Liesch; and grand-nephews, Gethin Wallace and Ivan Liesch. He was especially close to his cousins, Laurie (Craig) Fox and their children, Benjamin and Alexander Fox; cousin, Bev Dahl; and best friends, Bruce Bacon and Kenyon Rosenthal. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Margaret Dahl.

The family would like to extend gratitude to Steve Swetz and LouAnn Horgan, who assisted Greg prior to his hospitalization, and to the incredible staff at Stoughton Hospital who so compassionately cared for him during the last weeks of his life.

Per Greg’s wishes, no service will be held. There will be an Open House in the home prairie from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 28, 2025.

In lieu of gifts, memorials in Greg’s name may be donated to Stoughton Hospital Foundation (please designate to Geriatric Psychiatry), 900 Ridge St., Stoughton, WI 53589  or the North Central Conservancy Trust, 301 W. Cedar St., Stevens Point, WI 54481-0124. Any donations to the family will be gifted to the Wisconsin DNR and earmarked for Greater Prairie-chicken grassland management. So sorry to hear of this loss of a fine man so early in life. Greg indeed always had a positive attitude and witty responses. Thank you for your contributions to Wisconsin's natural resources; there were many, many more. Peace be with you Sharon, Savanna, and family. -Dave Halfmann

Sharon and Savanna: We are truly saddened to learn of the passing of Greg. We're both flooded with many memories of times and friendships shared. I recall that Bruce Bacon who subbed banding under me, referred to Greg as a potential sub permit...the first I recall his name being mentioned (way back in the early 80's?). As the wolf biologist, I'd stop in to see Joe Haug when travelling through the Rapids and Greg and I would chat. He assisted me in that fledgling DNR venture, the Outdoor Skills Center, on numerous occasions, especially as it launched. I also recall he and I quasi misbehaved one day by taking a road trip diversion to a prairie restoration somewhere near Oxford. It was autumn, the big bluestem was in glorious colour, and we even collected seed for our fledgling home prairie restoration! His wit, quiet charm, and passion for all things wild warms my heart. Deb and I feel for your loss and pain. His spirit soars freely among us now. We will pause and think of him and you on the 28th in Yellowstone.
