MIDDLETON - Daniel J. Barman, age 70, passed on to eternal life peacefully on Monday, September 8, 2025, in the home that he built in Middleton, in the company and care of his family after an 18-year battle with cancer.  He lived his own way, on his terms, until the very end.

Dan was born on November 23, 1954, the oldest son of Joseph and Mary (Maier) Barman. He graduated from Wisconsin Heights High School in 1972. Dan enlisted in the United States Army in 1972. He was stationed in Germany.  Dan was honorably discharged and returned home in 1976.

On October 29, 1977, Dan married Mary C. Haag at St. John’s Catholic Church in Waunakee. Dan worked in the trades before starting Barman Construction. Dan and Mary were blessed with five children, Melissa, Brad, Laurie, Adam and Andrea. Dan and Mary built a beautiful life together filled with hard work, love, laughter, family, neighbors and friends. Dan was an avid fisherman, gardener, builder and “fungi-enthusiast.” Dan would barter or trade vegetables or canned goods to friends and neighbors. He had a wealth of knowledge about a wide variety of topics that he loved to share with others.  His hard work as a gardener fed his family with the freshest, healthiest food, which he was extremely proud of.  His skills as a builder and tradesman were second to none. He was very proud to pass along those skills to his children so that his legacy would be passed on to others. The fruits of his labor and knowledge are embedded very deeply in each one of his children to pass on for many years.

Survivors include his loving wife of 47 years, Mary, and their children, Melissa (Tom) Moss of Sauk City, Bradley (Sarah) Barman of Sun Prairie, Laurie (Teddy) Barman of St. Petersburg, Fla., Adam (Christi Pasqualetto) Barman of Lodi and Andrea (Sam Willams) Barman of Chicago, Ill. In addition, he is survived by five grandchildren, Benjamin, Audrey, Rosemary, Caleb and Tigré; and his siblings and in-laws. He loved to take his grandkids fishing to all his “spots” to teach them the right way to fish. He loved taking them to his garden to pick berries and other produce.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Joseph; father and mother-in-law, Cyril and Laura Haag; and his brother, Michael Barman.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. FRANCIS XAVIER CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2947 Thinnes St., Cross Plains, at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 19, 2025, with a luncheon to follow at the church. A visitation will be held at the church from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 18, 2025, and also from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Reach Out Lodi.

I’ll always remember my friend as someone who carried kindness and genuine warmth wherever he went. Conversations with him were never small talk—they were meaningful, thoughtful, and always left you walking away with a smile. (I can still hear him say "I'm just telling ya") He loved to share the "good stuff" from his garden: fresh vegetables, jars of canned fruits and veggies, and of course, sweet corn that somehow tasted better because it came from him. (I stand by this- Dan had "THE- Best" sweet corn) Some of my favorite moments were the simple ones—having a beer together in the driveway or up at the Dorf Haus Supper Club, laughing and talking as the evening rolled on. Other times, we’d ride four-wheelers (or tresspass, depends on how you look at it) searching the woods for mushrooms or cutting wood, enjoying the kind of stuff and going around that felt like a mission for the day or afternoon. I can still picture him in the summer with his straw hat, or in the cooler months, walking around in his flannel shirt. He was both larger than life in size and in spirit, with a presence that filled the space and knowledge that seemed endless- (I'M JUST TELLING YA) He always knew something about everything, and he was never too busy to share it. Most of all, I’ll remember the friendship—steady, generous, and true. He made the days feel special, stopped by often, not always at the right time, but hey, it's Dan and he was my good friend, so I wouldnt mind at all..he always shared info and insight, and that’s a rare gift. I called him."The Mayor of Enchanted Valley" and I am truly and deeply saddened by him leaving us.

God truly blessed me with both a neighbor and a friend in Dan Barman. Over the years, his kindness and generosity were abundant, just like the bounty from his gardens. His hands were always full when he arrived, and our hearts (and bellies!) were always full when he left. It was a rare occasion that he would come by without some treat - sweet or savory, hand-picked or homegrown - and it was even rarer that he came by without sharing a funny story or a nugget of wisdom. Dan introduced me to many things - neighbors, friends, various area supper clubs, gardening, farm life, and endless political perspectives that never ceased to captivate and amuse me. I'll never forget the summer day in 2020 that Dan came up the drive carrying seed garlic for me to dry out and plant. I will always think of Dan when I plant garlic in the fall, harvest the scapes in the spring, and dig the bulbs in summer. Dan made life on Enchanted Valley so much richer and I am truly blessed to have been given the gift to know him and call him a friend.
