Obituary

Crayton J. Yapp passed away on September 3, 2025, at the age of 76.  He will be missed terribly and remembered with undying love as the best husband, father and grandfather with a great sense of humor.  He was kind, gentle, and a brilliant isotope geochemist and researcher as well as being a dedicated teacher.  He earned his Bachelor of Science at UW-Madison and his Master’s and Ph.D. at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).  He was a professor of geology at the University of New Mexico for 15 years and Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas for 30 years.


Crayton is survived by the love of his life and wife of 51 years, Marilea; two precious children, Clifford (Sarah) and Karen; and beloved grandson, Theodore.  He is also survived by his siblings, Philip (Nancy), Cheryl (Tom), Marcia (Maury) and Paul; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Audrey Yapp; and his brother, Lloyd T. Yapp.


A graveside service will be held at ST. IGNATIUS CALVARY CEMETERY in Mount Horeb at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, September 16, 2025. Following the service, there will be a gathering at Grundahl Park in Mount Horeb.  Per Crayton’s wish it will be an informal gathering - BYOB and snacks.

I grew up with the Yapp family on First Street in Mt. Horeb. Awesome family. CJ was the one that if you wanted an answer to any question. He was the one to go to. I remember finding a fossil in a field where all the neighborhood kids would play and taking that fossil to CJ. He knew everything about it. That was almost 60 years ago and that memory still sticks with me. RIP CJ
