CROSS PLAINS - Mary Catherine Virnig, age 85, of Cross Plains, passed away on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at Agrace HospiceCare. She was born on May 20, 1940, in Middleton, the daughter of Nick Ripp and Mary (Lynch) Ripp.

Mary graduated from Middleton High School. She was united in marriage to Jerome Virnig, on August 25, 1960, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Middleton. Over her lifetime, Mary had many jobs and enjoyed all of the many coworkers she met.

Mary was very proud of her family, home, flowers, and garden, and was often happiest tending to the flowers around her house. She loved to cook and clean and always took care of her family and friends. Whether you were a friend or stranger, no one left her home hungry. She will be fondly remembered for her wonderful pies. Mary was very dedicated to her faith and was very active in her church and her community, often helping with luncheons and in the kitchen at the church. Mary also loved to spend time with her family and friends at their cabin in Park Falls on Bass Lake.

Mary is survived by her husband, Jerome; daughter, Katherine "Kathy" (Stephen Gochenaur) Virnig; son, Michael Virnig; grandchildren, Luke (Grace) Virnig and Ben (Hailey) Virnig; great-grandchildren, Mathieu Virnig and Henry Virnig; daughter-in-law, Michele (Ron) Virnig; twin Brother, Marvin (Judy) Ripp; brother, Vince Ripp; sisters-in-law, Julie Ripp, Charlotte (Willy) Hefty and Rosie (Dave) Ballweg; brother-in-law, Pete Virnig; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her son, Philip Virnig; her parents, Mary and Nick Ripp; brother, Avitus Ripp; her in laws John and Maragret Virnig; sister-in-law, Sarah Ripp; and brother-in-law, Jim Virnig.

Our condolences to the family! Mary was a wonderful employee for Wolff Kubly Hardware, as were her grandchildren, Luke and Ben. Mary made everyone’s day better, be it customers or fellow employees. We all got a taste of the wonderful pies she would occasionally put in our break room! She certainly will be remembered! Sincerely, Stan & Sarah Vovos
