John W Linton

FITCHBURG - John Witherspoon Linton, age 76, of Fitchburg, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at his home. He was born on October 28, 1948, in Atlanta, Ga.

John spent a formative childhood in Atlanta before his family relocated, ultimately graduating from Gaithersburg High School in Maryland in 1966. He pursued his higher education at three distinguished institutions: Houghton College, University of California - Berkeley and the University of Wisconsin - each shaping his intellectual and personal journey.

Throughout his life, John embraced a range of vibrant communities. He lived in Boston, where he nurtured professional and personal ties, in San Mateo, Calif., where the Bay Area’s energy deeply resonated with his spirit and for many years in Madison, Wis., where he made a home and left a lasting impression on friends and neighbors.

John is survived by his daughter, Katja (Linton) Barker; his sister, Patricia Paul; and his brother, William Linton. Though preceded in death by his parents, his memory lives on through the lives he touched - warm, wise and endlessly curious.

A private memorial service celebrating John's life and legacy will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly invites those who wish to honor John’s memory to contribute to an educational fund or local arts initiative - a reflection of his lifelong passion for learning and creativity.
