Mabel Irene Vandervelde, 87, died peacefully from cancer on July 24, 2025, in Monona, Wis. She was born on December 30, 1937, to August and Hulda Hauck in Brainerd, Minn.

August and Hulda were so proud of their daughter when she graduated in 1960 from Methodist-Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester, Minn. She was the first in her family to receive a post secondary education degree. Mabel worked in various nursing positions. Her most recent was with developmentally disabled children and adults at Central Wisconsin Center in Madison.

She married Merle Vandervelde in December of 1961. They moved from Madison to Cottage Grove in 1970. They were married for over 60 years! They were blessed with four children, Kara (Andy) Schroeder, Cyndi (Mike) Buell, Paul (Shelly) Vandervelde and Jeff Vandervelde. She also enjoyed spending time with her 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mabel is additionally survived by her sister, Mary Ann Erickson; brother, Robert (Kim) Hauck; and sister-in-law, Shirley Hauck. She was preceded by her husband, Merle; parents; brother, Donald Hauck; and brother-in-law, John Erickson.

Merle and Mabel were charter members of Buckeye Evangelical Free Church (Door Creek Church) where they both served in various ways. Mabel most recently enjoyed helping in the church kitchen by keeping it clean and organized. It gave her great satisfaction to serve the Lord in this way.

Mabel was also very faithful and generous in giving financially to the Lord’s work: whether to children and grandchildren serving on mission trips or in full-time ministry, as well as various church needs and ministries. Mabel prioritized giving, and her actions served as a quiet example to others.

Mabel’s celebration of life will be held at DOOR CREEK CHURCH, 6602 Dominion Drive, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 4, 2025. Burial will take place at Highland Memory Gardens. A visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday.

The family would like to thank Heritage Senior Living of Monona and Agrace HospiceCare for the compassionate, professional and loving care she was given over the last year.

It's hard to find a more special person than Mabel. You can count yourself lucky to know her. She was always matter of fact, but had a huge heart with lots of love. What a great person, and I am so happy that I was able to know her.
