Obituary

BRODHEAD - Thomas Moczynski, age 59, of Brodhead, WI, passed away on June 5, 2025, surrounded by his loving wife and sons, following a lengthy battle with cancer. Tom was born on October 8, 1965, in Cudahy, WI, the son of James and Carol (Koenig) Moczynski. He attended the Oak Creek School System.

Following his graduation, Tom joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Long Beach California on the USS Peleliu. He spent the next six years sailing the Far East and South Pacific. Following his honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, he later joined the Navy Reserve and spent a total of 26 years as a member of the U.S. Navy on active duty or as a reservist, eventually attaining the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer (E-8).

While serving in the Navy Reserve, Tom joined the Milwaukee Police Department spending the next 10 years as a Milwaukee Police Officer. During this time, he met and married Brenda Moczynski (Braun) of Milwaukee.

Tom was recalled to active duty in the U.S. Navy following the 911 terrorist attacks, working Navy Security. Returning from active duty he and his family relocated to Door County, and he worked for the Sturgeon Bay Police Department for the next four years.

The family moved again, to Brodhead, where he retired from the Navy Reserve, and became the Deputy Chief of Police. Tom served as Chief of Brodhead Police Department for seven years. Later, Tom assumed the duties of Chief Deputy of the Green County Sheriff’s Department. He worked there until his retirement in early 2024. His law enforcement career spanned 30 years.

In his free time, you could find Tom enjoying doing activities with his wife, Brenda, and his sons, Matthew, Joshua and Daniel. His passions and hobbies included cooking, grilling, preparing smoked food and gardening.

Tom is survived by his wife, Brenda Moczynski (Braun); his sons, Matthew, Joshua and Daniel Moczynski; his mother, Carol Moczynski (Koenig); and his sister, Caryn Moczynski (Danae).  He was preceded in death by his father, James Moczynski; and older brother, Jeffery Moczynski.

Tom was an amazing guy. A great friend and a super shipmate. I appreciate his most recent and final phone call more than anyone could ever understand. I will miss him terribly but I’ll always have the warmest memories of our times together. I find at least a small bit of solace knowing that the reunion on the other side between Tom and his brother Jeff was monumental and eternal. I look forward to meeting them both once again when my turn comes.

My condolences to the Moczynski Family, Tom was the Best Friend anybody could have growing up. He was a true family guy from the word go, the love and relationship he had for siblings Jeff and Caryn was amazing, the many day's and nights at the Moczynski household they all made me feel like family and God I needed that. I was wild and craving adventure, Tom was down for adventure too but he was the voice of reason. We were coming of age in our own. Tom was the guy who was always at your side or had your back when you needed it, how many people have or even had someone like him in their life? I am so lucky and blessed I did. I was Honored to stand up in Tom and Brenda's wedding, I could see his joy and happiness that day that would lead to a wonderful journey of him becoming an Awesome Husband and Father. Time and distance which is part of Life got in between us for a while, though when we talked it felt like we just picked up from where we left off. I was hoping if I got better and my health finally is that we could sling a leg over motorcycles, relive and share some of our earlier adventures with his sons. How can I sum up Tom for You, He is someone who if you never met would have touched your life and made you feel better, You would have felt loved and cared about, you would have felt comfortable and safe, you would have felt glad when he was around and truly look forward to the next time you'd meet. I feel sorry if you never knew him,"Oh what a life experience you missed." As for those family and friends who did know and love Tom "I pray the Grace of our Creator is there for you in this and all painful times. Chris Kopplin

Tom, at the helm of a C27 enroute to Catalina Island circa 1986/7. Also onboard were myself, Paul Andrews, Steve Morrell, Jim Braybrook and Tom Braybrook. We would go out on long weekends, anchor at the Island and scuba dive a few spots. Always a wonderful time!!
