Obituary

OREGON - Cara Mavis passed away Friday, July 11, 2025. She was born to George L. and E. Joyce Reznichek in Antigo, Wis. Cara is survived by her husband, James A. Mavis; son, Tyler J. Mavis; nephew, Brett A. (Cheryl) Krueger, and their daughter, Bailey, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii; and extended relatives. Cara was predeceased by her parents; her sister, Patricia J. “Patty” Krueger, and Patricia's husband, Major John B. Krueger, USMC, of Reedsburg, Wis.

Cara grew up in Antigo and graduated from Stevens Point with a B.S. degree. She met Jim Mavis while in college and they were married during a blizzard February 8, 1969; three days later, Jim left for Vietnam as a military police officer with the 101st Airborne Army Screaming Eagles Division.

As a girl, Cara was very active in Girl Scouts, learning leadership and business skills and earning the privilege of attending an international conclave of over 10,000 girls at Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. She enjoyed an eclectic career in management positions with Head Start, insurance companies and associations until her retirement from the State Bar of Wisconsin in Madison, Wis.

In addition to her professional life, Cara enjoyed downhill skiing, camping with her family, motorcycling and spending time at the family cottage on Pence Lake, Wis. An important part of Cara's life, she felt truly blessed to have married a talented and creative husband and shared in raising a remarkable young man; she was grateful to have wonderful friends she considered part of her family.

I liked Cara as soon as I met her especially because she married my brother. I can’t remember her ever saying a bad thing about anyone. She had a great smile and laugh. I’m glad I had the privilege of having her in our family. She will be greatly missed.

Jim and Tyler and family, I was so saddened to hear about Cara's passing. I worked closely with Cara at Sentry when we both worked for Royal Johnson in the Life Company. Cara was a delight as a co-worker and friend. I respected her so much. Cara loved desserts... I remember when we were at a restaurant Cara always looked to see what their desserts were and ordered her meal accordingly making sure to leave room for dessert! You have my deepest sympathy, she will be missed. Barb Taugner
