Obituary

SUN PRAIRIE - John Scott Malain, age 2, of Sun Prairie, passed away on Friday, May 23, 2025. He was born on January 19, 2023, in Madison, the son of Samuel and Sydney (Stanger) Malain.

John was fondly called "Mr. Grumps" because he was known to walk into daycare grumpy but leave in a happy mood. His Dad called him a "Sour Patch Kid" because he could be in a sour mood in one minute and sweet in the next. John loved chocolate and made his presence known when he arrived at daycare by screaming into the building, sometimes with chocolate all over his face. One of his favorite things about daycare, besides the loving staff, was the fact he was fed a second breakfast.

John was a very bubbly child, and he was larger than life with a big personality. He was playful, and he loved basketball and soccer. He was very talkative and would (or at least attempt to) recite the mealtime prayer with his sister. He was known to yell out "Amen!" at the end of each prayer, even if he was in a grumpy mood.

John’s favorite song was "We Are The Dinosaurs." He would also request and sing along with his mom to a special rendition of "Jesus Loves Me", changing the words to "Jesus Loves John" as a bedtime lullaby.

Someone always near and dear to John’s heart was his sister. John was always caring towards his sister, and he would make sure to share the snacks that he stashed away all around the house and car with her. He was her best friend.

John will be dearly missed by his parents, Samuel and Sydney; sister, Bennett Malain; maternal grandparents, Scott and Collett Stanger; paternal grandmother, Diedra Malain; aunts, Cayton (Jake) Heath and Madison Kopta; and great-grandmother, Arlene Hitchman. He was preceded in death by paternal grandfather, Keith Malain; and great-grandparents, Frances and John Ainlay, Robert and Mary Malain, and Jerry Hitchman.

A funeral service will be held at HOLY CROSS LUTHERAN CHURCH, 734 Holy Cross Way, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, with Pastor Mark F. Bartels presiding. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday.

“John himself was not the light; he was simply a witness to tell about the light.” John 1:8 John blessed so many people in his time on this earth. He was a witness to God’s blessings and light. Even with his grumpy ‘tudes, he was full of pure joy. It was amazing watching John grow and learn new things. Even though God called him home, John’s memory will forever be touched on everyone’ heart who came in contact with him. He has truly made an impression on this world.

My heart aches at the fact that I never had the opportunity to meet you in this life, but I can’t wait to do so when our paths finally do cross. I’m thinking about you, your mom, your dad and your sister everyday and sending them so much love and healing. You are their guardian angel now, watching over them and protecting them. Rest in paradise, baby J.
