Obituary

COTTAGE GROVE - Larry Joe Zabel, age 64, of Cottage Grove, passed away on Friday, May 16, 2025, at Madison Health and Rehab. He was born on May 18, 1960, in Webster City, Iowa, the son of Edward and Karen (Daniels) Zabel.


Larry graduated from Madison East High School in 1978. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a Military Policeman and got to travel the world. Larry worked as a security guard and later at American TV. He enjoyed playing video games, reading books and playing with the family dog. He loved spending time with his nieces.


Larry is survived by his father, Edward; sister, Kim; and nieces, Lora Vaughan, Bethany Moser, Ashley Taylor, Virginia Meyers and Liah Gimer. He was preceded in death by his mother, Karen; and brother, Edward Zabel, Jr.


A visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 10 a.m. until 12 noon on Monday, June 9, 2025. Burial will follow at Cottage Grove Cemetery in Cottage Grove.

Larry was a very sweet person. We met 25 years ago after my 2nd husband passed away. He was always there to listen and push me forward when I needed it. I worked with Larry at Patrick AFB in the ‘80s. I remember him as a quiet leader and great cop. RIP brother.

I was Larry’s roommate at RAF Mildenhall he was a good friend and often hosted dungeons and dragons games in our dorm room. He enjoyed his career as a security police officer and he had many friends while at RAF Mildenhall. Rest in peace my friend.
