Obituary

STOUGHTON - Judy Roy left us on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, after a long battle with Parkinson’s. She was born Judith Ann Anderson on the family farm in Crystal Falls, Mich., to Signe and Oscar Anderson on September 25, 1941. The baby sister of Margaret (Richard) Campfield, Dorothy (Carl) Franzen and Sally (Russ) Westfahl, her 100% Finnish heritage gave her the SISU that carried her through life, and the “Yooper” pride of growing up in Upper Michigan never left her.

Judy received her RN degree from St. Luke’s, Marquette, Mich., in 1963, and immediately set off for California with some of her classmates. After a whirlwind 18 months working at a Sacramento hospital, Michigan called her back. It was at a street dance in Crystal Falls that she met her husband, Darrell Roy, and they married in 1965. They found their way to Stoughton where they stayed and raised Karen (Jerry) Johanning and Jim (Amy) Roy, and welcomed grandchildren, Anika (fiancé, Holden Hartley), Bridget and Lucy Roy, and Max and Elin Johanning.

Nursing was her vocation and passion. In her 49-year health care career, she served patients and families at Skaalen Home, Nazareth House, Drs. Schammel and Hill, Dean Clinic and Dean Home Health. But she also nursed every family member, friend and friend-of-a-friend who called seeking medical advice or a sympathetic ear.

In her free time, she and Darrell grew tremendous vegetable gardens every summer and canned everything she could. She was an active member of Covenant Lutheran Church, serving in many different ministries. She bowled for many years and loved to dance with Darrell.

There was an angel community that surrounded her, especially in the past year since Darrell died, and we thank you dear friends and neighbors. And to the staff at UW Hospital, Skaalen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and Agrace Hospice, our deep gratitude, especially to the nurses.

A memorial service will be held at COVENANT LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1525 N. Van Buren St., Stoughton, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2025, with a luncheon to follow. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. A private burial is planned at the Town of Dunn Burying Ground.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be gifted in Judy’s name to Agrace HospiceCare to extend nursing support to others.

My heartfelt prayers for you all and your mom. She took such wonderful care of all she encountered but her care for my dad at Nazareth house over 30 years ago has stayed with me all these years. She taught me so much just in the way she cared for everyone. Heaven truly welcomes an angel! Thank you for sharing her with us!

Your mom was a wonderful woman. I had many conversations with her before I chose to become a nurse myself. She was a committed wife, mother, nurse, friend. She was always so welcoming to me even after not seeing her for “years.” She truly loved people. What a privilege to have her as your mother! I am so sorry for your loss.

Judy is a third cousin of mine. We both have 100% Finnish heritage. I didn't have any other relatives in the USA except Judy and her family. We were playmates as children and best friends as adults. It pained me to see her suffering for the last many years. I am sure she had her moments of anger and frustration; however, not once did she complain to me. Our conversations were about what she could do! It became too painful for my husband to see her decline about three years ago, so I only spoke with her on the phone until that too became too difficult. I am at peace with her having a new painless body and being reunited with her loved ones who have gone before her. RIP, dear Judy, until we meet again in our eternal resting place. I am sending condolences to Judy's loving family and all others who also loved her.
