FITCHBURG, Wis. - Salvatore “Sal” A. Troia, of Fitchburg, Wis., passed away peacefully at Meriter Hospital surrounded by loved ones on Saturday, May 10, 2025. A devoted husband, father and friend, Sal lived a full and passionate life marked by integrity, generosity and deep commitment to family. Sal was born on December 4, 1938, to the late Joseph and Maria (Bastone) Troia. Sal graduated from Edgewood High School in 1957. He went on to be the first in his family to graduate college, earning a degree in accounting from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Sal spent the majority of his professional career as a Certified Public Accountant in the banking industry, ending his career as president of the Data Services division of M&I Bank. Throughout his career, Sal volunteered as a member on the board of several professional and business organizations. Sal served on the executive board of the Yahara Lakes Association, including two terms as president. Sal also enjoyed learning about and supporting the prairie restoration efforts of the UW Arboretum. Sal and Judy were active members at Holy Wisdom Monastery, also championing the earth and prairie restoration.
In his late 40s, Sal developed a passion for competitive bicycle racing. He had a much-decorated cycling career, racing throughout the Midwest until the age of 82. He loved being a part of the cycling community in Madison and helped the Midwest Masters Biking club host cycling races in the area. Sal and Judy spent several winters in Tucson, Ariz., where Sal’s favorite thing was biking up Mount Lemmon. Sal and his wife Judy enjoyed travelling the world. Together they explored the historic towns and vibrant cultures of Europe, Costa Rica and even a trip to the Galapagos Islands.
