MADISON - Lyle J. Hasenberg, faithful husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend passed away on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at the age of 92. Lyle was born on February 25, 1933, in Kenosha, Wis., to Hubert and Frances. He married the love of his life, Marlene Metallo, in 1957.
Lyle served in the U.S. Army in an administrative position from just after high school until college. Upon graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a business degree he worked for the City of Kenosha. In 1967 he moved his family to Madison to become Personnel Director of the Health and Human Services Department for the State of Wisconsin.
Lyle was a long-time member of St. Dennis Parish, serving on the School Commission and Parish Council. His five children and eldest grandson graduated from St. Dennis School. In addition, Lyle and Marlene were actively engaged and supported the Schoenstatt Sisters and Lyle was involved with the Knights of Columbus for over 50 years. He also supported PBS and the School Sisters of Notre Dame.
Lyle loved to read, fish, solve puzzles, bowl, tinker in the garage, and work on his train layout in his basement. He was an avid fan of the Milwaukee Brewers, the Green Bay Packers, and a Wisconsin Badgers Football season ticket holder. Lyle trusted his faith, his five children and Consumer Reports. Lyle researched every major purchase through Consumer Reports, and was one of the first Madisonians to get his name on a waitlist for a Honda Accord before they were available in the United States. Lyle enjoyed listening to Big Band music every Sunday morning and often turned up the volume as a way to get his teenagers up, out of bed, and on their way to church. His five children often challenged him to a game of Trivial Pursuit, hoping that one day he wouldn’t win in just one turn.
Lyle is survived by his wife Marlene; his children, Lynn (Mike) Kohrs, Jackie (Chris) Burwell, Karen (Gary) Beck and Paul (Robin) Hasenberg; and daughter-in-law, Jane (Dave) Hasenberg; brother, Mark T. Hasenberg; sister-in-law, Mary Stellato; and brother-in-law, James Metallo. In addition, his grandchildren, Anthony Denu, Andrew Kohrs (Tony Jovenitti), Kelly Kohrs (Clayton Boydston), Gwendolyn Hasenberg, Amy Hasenberg-Elliott (Josh Elliott), Alex Hasenberg and Ashton Hasenberg; and two great-granddaughters.
Lyle was preceded in death by his eldest son, Dave; sister, Jean Hasenberg SSND; brother-in-law, John Metallo; sisters-in-law, Gloria Hasenberg and Georgeann Metallo; brother-in-law, Russell Stellato; niece, Tina Gjerstadt; parents; great-grandson, Evander; and many more beloved family members and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at QUEEN OF APOSTLES PARISH, ST. DENNIS CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Road, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 15, 2025. A graveside will follow at Highland Memory Gardens, with a luncheon to follow back at the church. A visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday.
