Janet Mei Joe

July 02, 1953 - April 29, 2025

Obituary

COTTAGE GROVE - Janet Mei Joe, age 71, of Cottage Grove, passed away on Tuesday, April 29, 2025. She was born on July 2, 1953, in Madison, the daughter of Shuck and Dolores (Steele) Joe.

Janet graduated from Madison La Follette High School in 1971 and UW-Platteville in 1975. She was a proud member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, and cherished her close friends’ group, Fang and the Gang. Janet moved to Los Angeles and worked as a writer and promo editor for various companies. It was there that she lived out her passion for music as a member of Angel City Chorale and Vox Femina choruses.

Janet moved back to Madison in 2019 to be close to family and became active in the Madison Symphony Chorus. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading and watching British television shows, but singing remained her passion. She will be remembered for her sparkle, unique personality, and infectious laugh (passed down from mom).

She is surely singing with the Angels!

Janet is survived by her brother, Daniel Joe; sister, Deanna (Don Brinkmeier) Denman; David (Tracy) Joe; and nephew, Dawson; nieces, Lanee, Cora, Maggie and Andrea. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dolores and Shuck.

A funeral service will be held at HOPE LUTHERAN CHURCH, 3702 County Highway AB, McFarland, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 6, 2025. Burial will take place at Hope Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family for funeral expenses would be appreciated. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

To the Joe family, and friends, I send my sincerest condolences to you. Janet’s absence in our world is a loss. There is a star twinkling above to remind us of her spark, song, and love for humanity. Janet was a wonderful friend. We had just made a commitment to see each other more often…, a good reminder to not delay those efforts. It was with much sorry when I noted the funeral info in my calendar. Janet, I’ll miss you forever, my friend. Shine on!!!!

That’s such a beautiful picture of Janet. I will always remember her smile and laugh! Unfortunately the last time I saw her was at another classmate’s funeral. You have to know that she’s with God looking down on her family and friends. Keep your memories alive in your heart. I am so sorry that I will not be there for Janet’s funeral, but am so thankful that I got to know her. Lora Briggs Walters

Whenever I think of Janet, it is always with admiration for her pure ethos and kind spirit. And I will forever remember her gregarious, welcoming laugh that reminded me so much of her mother. In my mind, I can still hear the two of them laughing back and forth. Sweet dreams, Dearheart! Peace be to you and yours. Love always, Karl Schlenker

Janet was one of the first people to warmly welcome me to the Madison Symphony Chorus. We quickly discovered we had both recently moved back to Wisconsin from Southern California and were looking forward to connecting more over our shared experiences right as rehearsal was about to begin … Her kindness made a lasting impression. My heart goes out to the Joe family during this difficult time.
