Obituary

MIDDLETON - Michael (Mike) John Miles, age 69, passed away unexpectedly on April 22, 2025, at UW Hospital. He was born on August 7, 1955, in Reedsburg, Wis., to John and Delores (Timbers) Miles.

Mike married his high school sweetheart, Penny Holmes in 1977. They settled into the Verona area where they raised their two sons, Aaron and Shannon. He spent his career in the banking industry, having left Cuna Mutual in 2016, followed by an enjoyable and relaxing retirement alongside Penny in Middleton, Wis.

As a dad, Mike loved nothing more than watching his boys play sports. When not coaching, he was often spotted on the sidelines snapping photos and cheering them on enthusiastically! He was a lifelong golfer, enjoyed rooting for all Wisconsin-based sports teams and watching his grandchildren’s activities.

Mike was well known for his love of family, quick smile, and infectious laugh. He was a friend to everyone and was kindhearted and welcoming to all.

Mike is survived by his wife, Penny; sons, Aaron (Stephanie) and Shannon (Katie); grandchildren, Jack, Aiden, Lillie, Charley, Sloane and Crew; and sister, Patti Pape; as well as many other loving relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Delores; parents-in-law, Virgil and Lorna Holmes; and brother-in-law, Nick Pape.

A memorial service will be held at GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 7435 University Ave., Middleton, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2025. I met Mike when I was 4 years old and he was 3. We shared many adventures together (and maybe a couple misadventures). So glad to have had one last lunch together last month. Rest in peace my friend.

My sincere condolences to Penny and family. I remember playing softball with Mike along with David Lynett in Corwith’s backyard after school. Then in high school he did meet up with Penny a classmate of mine. They were always a cute couple with that special connection. Mike was a wonderful guy. He will be missed by his family and friends. Penny, my sincere condolences to you and your family. I got to know Mike in high school and we became good friends. We ended up being roommates while attending school in Madison. A lot of good memories were created. I will always remember his wide grin and easy going style. I am glad I got to visit with Mike last month. He will be missed. Ron Roewer

Big Blue as Mike Leffin nicknamed him, he loved to coach his boys, our son Matt was one of the young men he spent endless hours coaching. This team, oh this team… they tried their best and yet victory would elude them. Coach Mike never gave up, always a smile on his face and hope in his heart. He went on to establish the first football parent’s club and invented the famous paw prints that lined the locker room to the football field and later the driveways of Verona athletes. Mike you will be missed, you brought us endless hours of joy. Tee and Mike Leffin
