Obituary

MADISON - Carol Ann McClatchey, age 83, of Madison, passed away on Thursday, April 17, 2025, at St. Mary's Hospital, with her husband and six children along with some of the grandchildren at her side.

Carol was born on April 30, 1941, in Madison, Wis., the daughter of Bryon and Theresa (Cole) Knipfer. Carol was the matriarch of the family. She was the go-to person when someone needed that special answer and the glue that held it altogether. She will be sorely missed by many.

Carol graduated from Madison West High School in 1959. She married Mac McClatchey on September 9, 1988, in Dubuque, Iowa. In addition to her role as a mother, Carol worked as a manager in the Madison City Attorney's Office, retiring in 1996. In her free time, she enjoyed playing bridge and euchre and gambling.

Carol is survived by her husband, Meade "Mac" McClatchey; sons, Dan (Liesa) O'Shaughnessy, Mike (Denise) O'Shaughnessy and Brett (Kim) Henes; daughters, Keeley O' Shaughnessy, Shannon (Robert) Hanson (O' Shaughnessy) and Paige (John) Kullman; step-son, Steve McClatchey; and step-daughter, Shannon Welgren; sister, Linda (Rick) Gibson; and brother, Lee Knipfer. She is also survived by many other relatives and friends, plus numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Ronnie Knipfer and Delmer Knipfer.

A celebration of life will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, 2025. Burial will be held at Highland Memory Gardens.

I cannot imagine playing bridge without Carol. As she was for her family, she was also the matriarch of our various groups as well as the glue that held us all together. She would frequently check in with me during my recent health issues. Her caring and gentleness inspires me to be a better person. I will truly miss her so much. Sending hugs and prayers to her family at this very sad time - but hopefully remembering her kind ways will also bring us much comfort. Gloria Hehenberger
