Obituary

MADISON - Eliza Alice Peters, age 99, of Madison, passed away on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at St. Mary's Hospital. She was born on June 6, 1925, in Rochdale, Lancashire, England, the daughter of Fred and Mary (Hoyle) Howe.

Alice married Gilbert E. Peters, an American serviceman, on January 19, 1946, at Healds Green Methodist Church in Chadderton, Lancashire, England. She worked as a bookkeeper in Madison for Baillies, Denson, Erickson & Smith before retiring in 1985.

Alice was a devoted member of Immanuel Lutheran Church for 70 years, and a member of the Madison Central Lions Club. She served on the board of the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra and was made an honorary life member. She sang in the Madison Civic Chorus and the Welsh Chorus. She was also a member of the Cambrian Heritage Society, the Yorkshire Dialect Society and the Goss China Collectors’ Club.

She enjoyed classical music and singing in church choir and spending summers in England. She enjoyed growing flowers and feeding the birds. She was also a great cook and did home canning. In what spare time she had she knitted up a storm.

Alice is survived by her son, Roger M. Peters (Kristin Schmiedlin); daughters, Linda Peters and Karen Peters (Elliot Vittes); and granddaughter, Allison Vittes (Kevin Fulmer). She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert; parents, Mary and Fred; son, Randall Peters; and brother, Wilfred Howe.

A Celebration of Life will be held at IMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1021 Spaight St., Madison, on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at 11 a.m. Family greeting will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. A light lunch will be served in the Lakeview Room at noon on Saturday.

Our Mom loved bright and beautiful colors, so please feel free to join us in wearing lively colors in celebration of her spirit.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church or the Dane County Humane Society in memory of Alice Peters.

Alice was a wonderful lady and a witty one as well. She was a pleasure to talk to anytime and especially at our foot appointments at the Monona Senior Center. She will be missed and I hope she has met her creator in Heaven. RIP Alice.

My first memories of Alice were of her popping into our back porch to drop off fresh tomatoes from her garden. She had a great wit, a great smile and a great laugh. She was a dear friend of our family. Sending condolences and peace to her dear family.

I have memories as a little girl of Alice often stopping over to have coffee and conversation with my mom at our kitchen table. As I grew older I appreciated her wit, talents, integrity and no nonsense demeanor. She knitted little coats for my toddlers...that are just beautiful and will be passed down, now to a second generation. Loved always seeing her laugh with that wonderful twinkle in her eye. with sympathy to her family, Nancy Koster Martin
