Obituary

MADISON - Brenda Lee Oldenburg, age 64, of Madison, passed away on Sunday, April 13, 2025. She was born on February 9, 1961, in Madison, the daughter of Barbara (Pells) Laing.

Brenda attended Malcolm Shabazz High School, where she had made many friends. She married Joseph Oldenburg on July 18, 2020.  She proudly worked as a custodian for the Sun Prairie School District.

Brenda was a giver to the strongest degree. She loved to help people in any way possible and make others smile. Her favorite thing to do was to go thrifting and antiquing; though not for herself, mostly for gifts to share with others, no matter the occasion. Brenda absolutely loved live music, spending time tending to her garden, and decorating for the holidays (predominantly for Halloween and Christmas). She also enjoyed spending time out in nature, whether it was near the Great Lakes walking on the sand and searching for beach glass, or happening upon a four-leaf clover whenever she looked down into the grass.

Brenda is survived by her husband, Joseph Oldenburg; daughter, Patience Kingsley; stepdaughter, Diana Shegonee; brother, Jerry (Colleen) Howes; sister, Dawn Trouvé; and previous husband, John Kingsley. She was preceded in death by her mother, Barbara Laing.

A visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 1:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 24, 2025. Words of remembrance will be shared from 3 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. A private graveside service will take place at Roselawn Memorial Park, Monona.

I used to run into Brenda all the time when I taught in Portage. She was unfailingly positive and caring. She was never shy about sharing her spiritual hope for the world, and she was always a candle of light in the grayness of reality. I have only happy memories of the times we spoke, and I will hold on to those memories as they are proof positive of what is good in this world. So sorry that she was taken from us so soon. My heart goes out to Joe and her family.
