Obituary

MADISON - Stanley Lyle Phillips, age 89, of Madison, passed away surrounded by his sons on April 11, 2025, at UW East Hospital. He was born on August 18, 1935, in Dodgeville, Wis., the son of George C. and Grace W. (Woodbury) Phillips. He married Alvina (Weber) Phillips, the of love his life for 66 years, on February 15, 1958.  They had two boys, Terry and Wayne.


Stanley attended a one room schoolhouse and graduated from Ridgeway High School, where he played baseball, basketball, and played in the band. He served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1958 in Germany; and is a life member of DeForest American Legion Post 348, where he is a member of the Honor Guard.  When Stanley returned home from Germany, he attended Madison Vocational School, where he learned the trade of welding. He became a Steamfitter with locals No. 394 and No. 601 and was a member for over 50 years, where he loved working on and teaching operators about OSHA Safety on NH3 refrigeration systems.  Stanley enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, playing softball in DeForest for many years on the Char Bar Team, and escaping the winter to their home in Green Valley, Ariz.


Stanley is survived by his sons, Terry (Cheryl Wells) Phillips of McFarland and Wayne (Marla) Phillips of Ottawa, Ill.; grandchildren, Callie Phillips and Chelsea (Anthony) Rupp, Brandon (Carin) Phillips, and Austin Phillips; and great-grandchildren, Emma and Cameron Rupp and Alvina Phillips; sisters, Lois Powell, June Weber; and brother, Authur (Helen) Phillips; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Alvina; parents; his in-laws, Renzie and Emma Weber; brother, Charles Phillips; sister, Joyce Brandt; daughter-in-law, Wendy Phillips; and great-grandson, William Rupp.


A funeral service will be held at ST. MATTHEW’S (New Life Church) LUTHERAN CHURCH, 7564 Cottage Grove Road, Madison, at 12 noon on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. A graveside service with Military Honors will follow at Highland Memory Gardens, 3054 County Highway BB, Cottage Grove. Visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Tuesday.


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Badger Honor Flight, American Legion Post No. 348 and Children’s Miracle Network. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Breaks my heart to hear of Stan's passing.. I worked with Stan at Oscar Mayer for several years and later joined Stan when he owned Phillips Refrigeration.. we kept in contact for many years after. Sincere condolences to Stan's family, he was a true friend and will be missed.

I remember I walked in to a room and turned rite around coughing from Amonia. Stan is standing in the middle of the room laughing at me. Very Smart ,Kind man.
