OREGON - Ruth Crennell, 93, of Oregon, Wis., died peacefully at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison on March 27, 2025.
Born Ruth Blackburn in Athlone, Ireland on February 6, 1932, she graduated from Trinity College, Dublin in 1954 with a degree in microbiology, and shortly thereafter married Ean Crennell, who would become her lifelong partner. Ruth and Ean immigrated to Newfoundland, Canada in 1955, and later to the United States, eventually settling in Wisconsin.
Ruth seemed to gain her spiritual strength through nature; from her small farms in both Verona and later Oregon, the land, the trees, the plants, and her animals, which included multiple dogs, barn cats, and especially through her beloved horses, of which she had many over the years. A lifelong equestrian, Ruth also bred, raised and trained horses, and was a riding instructor. She was also an avid reader and student of the English language.
Ruth is survived by her two sons, Malcolm (Mandie) and Peter; and Peter’s three children, Helena, Julian and Maya. She is also survived by many adored friends, too numerous to mention. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ean, in 2020.
