Obituary
MIDDLETON - Jan Maureen Hagen, 69, of Middleton, passed away on March 20, 2025, surrounded by her family. She was born on September 8, 1955, in Madison, Wis., to Kenneth and Barbara (Wilkins) Olson. She was a loving wife, mother, grammie, daughter, and sister.
Jan graduated from Wisconsin Heights High School in 1973. She then moved to Madison where she completed her Clerk Typist certificate at MATC. While living in Madison, she met wonderful friends, including the love of her life, John Andrew Hagen, while waitressing at the Checkerboard. John and Jan were married on October 9, 1982, and spent 42 years together building an incredible life and home. They enjoyed watching various sporting events, going on walks, hosting holidays, boating, listening to music, and playing Euchre and other games. They were truly lucky to have found each other and understood each other like no one else did. They were the best of friends.
In 1981, Jan started working at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison. She had a lovely 30+ year career where she filled many roles with particularly fond memories as a secretary in the Volunteer Office. After working at St. Mary’s, she finished her working career at the UW Alumni Association before retiring to become a full-time grammie.
Jan was patient, kind, and although a quiet person, she was the best listener. She listened without judgment, offered thoughtful advice, and had a genuine caring heart. A perfectionist by nature, Jan was meticulous and highly organized. She worked hard to ensure everything and everyone received care and attention. Jan possessed a special gift for creating a welcoming, peaceful home filled with love.
Jan’s best memories were spent with her family. She was most happy when being home and having her husband, children, and dog with her. Jan repeatedly said she “loved her children more than life itself.” Her family was her everything, her joy, and her purpose in life. She consistently put the needs of her children before herself and gave them the most wonderful childhood any child could ask for. She made holidays and birthdays beyond special.
Jan’s survivors are her husband, John Hagen; her children, Riley (Inseon) Hagen, Darby (Michael) Driscoll, and Brady (Stephany Weiers) Hagen; her grandchildren, Brandon and Emani Hagen and Kace, Owen, and Baby Driscoll; her parents, Kenneth and Barbara Olson; her brothers, David (Kristina) Olson and Trygve (Marcy Martin) Olson; and many in-laws, nephews, and nieces that were near and dear to her heart.
Jan always told her children when they were going through hard times to hand it upstairs and God will take the worry away from them. Now, we’re handing Jan upstairs, and we know that God will take care of her.
A memorial service will be held at ASBURY CHURCH, 6101 University Ave., Madison, at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 11, 2025. Visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday.
