Obituary

CUBA CITY - Lucy May Draginis has been loved and cherished from the moment we learned we were pregnant.

Like her big brother, she was in a hurry to come out and meet us. Just shy of 32 weeks gestation, Lucy May was placed in our arms at 5:29 p.m. on March 16, 2025, and spent the entire hour of her life outside of the womb wrapped in our love. She was born with a full head of hair, our family’s trademark long toes, and, much to her brother’s excitement, elbows!

After her diagnosis with trisomy 18 in December, we were cautioned that Lucy May would likely be tiny and very weak. However, our gritty girl apparently didn’t hear or chose not to listen (in typical second-child fashion, we think). She loved kicking and flopping around just to say “hello” and seemed to really enjoy hearing the cacophony her brother Cole so often creates.

True to the character she displayed in utero, Lucy May shocked us all by cooing after delivery and squeezing her papa’s finger. The hour we had with her will be among the sweetest memories our family makes and we will cling to our physical time as a family of four for the rest of our lives.

Our grief is deep but we are comforted by our knowledge that Lucy May is in the arms of our savior, Jesus Christ.

She leaves behind her mama and papa, Claire and John Draginis, and her big brother, Cole, of Cuba City, Wis. The people who love her outside of her immediate family are innumerable. She was preceded in death by her great-grandparents, Dr. Richard and Nancy Edwards, Terrence Joyce, Lois Nass, Gene and Julie Sherven, and Dennis and Lilas Draginis.

We would like to thank the staff at Southwest Health in Platteville, Wis., for providing excellent care to all of us and for honoring Lucy’s life so beautifully.

Lucy May was buried in the Hyde Chapel Cemetery in Ridgeway, Wis., on March 27, 2025.

A celebration of life will be held at Hope Church, 11893 John F. Kennedy Road, Dubuque, Iowa, at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 12, 2025. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the celebration of life. All are welcome. A lunch will follow. Please feel free to wear bright colors!

In lieu of flowers, our family would be honored if you would consider donating to the Lucy May Foundation. We are channeling our love and energy into helping families like ours who have hospital bills to pay for babies they don’t get to bring home. Please visit lucymay.org to donate via GoFundMe or contact us to donate directly.
