Steve graduated from Watertown High School in 1965 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 1970. He also earned credits toward a master’s degree in business from UW-Madison.

His peers and competitors often commented on his integrity and fairness in the course of his interactions with them as well as an upbeat attitude.

Steve served in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1970-1976, achieving the rank of Staff Sargent. His Infantry unit was not sent to Vietnam.

Steve was also active in church and many community volunteer organizations over his adult life, including roles as President of the Waunakee Wisconsin Optimist Club on two separate terms and also as Lt. He also was on the board for an interdenominational group of parishes serving the needy and low-income people in the Eagle River area.

Steve especially loved delivering Meals on Wheels to the elderly in the St. Germain, Wis., area for over two years and then in the Middleton area for two years. He also served as a member of the St. Bernard parish's St. Vincent De Paul Society for three years.

I was blessed to have worked closely with Steve for several years at TDS. One of the most intelligent yet most humble person I have met. Was always so great at providing much appreciated guidance and education not only on a professional level but personal as well. Class act man that I really miss having in my circle. Thoughts and prayers to your family. Todd McNally.

My deepest sympathy Barb and family. We live many miles apart but I remember you and all the times we gathered together at family functions, usually holidays or reunions. Barb, Holly, Jamie, Jackie, Rick, Brooke, and the entire family, our deepest condolences and prayers on the passing of Steve. Steve was a great man! I personally had many conversations with him and he was always loving, upbeat, positive, gentle, and kind. Most importantly, he had intense compassion for those in need. Steve was such an advocate for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. His time, membership, and volunteerism with the Middleton St. Vincent de Paul Conference was a blessing to those members and to all of us in the St. Vincent de Paul Family. Thank you God for the gift of Steve! May the perpetual light shine upon him. With gratitude, -Eric Fleming, St. Vincent de Paul - Madison - Dane County
