Obituary

MCFARLAND - With heavy hearts, we graciously share the death of our mom/grandma and wife, Joan Beth Serig, at the young age of 90! She died peacefully at her home in McFarland, on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. Joan was born on September 22, 1934, in Black River Falls, the daughter of Donald and Lenore (Harebo) Wyss.

Joan loved growing up in the Hatfield, Black River Falls area. She graduated from Black River Falls High School and post high school she attended Madison Secretary College in Madison. She was united in marriage to Olin Stenbroten on March 13, 1954, and later married Gail Serig on November 10, 2003.

Joan worked at McFarland Elementary School and later went into the auto parts business with Olin. Being a very social person, Joan loved her role as customer service representative at St. Mary's Hospital. She completed her career at Beltone Hearing where she worked as an office manager.

Joan was a member of McFarland Lutheran Church. Joan leaves behind a legacy of positivity. She will be fondly remembered as loving, kind, compassionate, sweet, fun, chatty, adventurous, lovely with a bit of sass and a wonderful matchmaker for her son, David. She loved chocolate and a whiskey old-fashioned press with brussel sprouts, especially from Toby’s Supper Club. In her free time, Joan enjoyed shopping, loved dancing with Gail at the VFW, playing horseshoes with the girls, playing euchre, and traveling and camping in the Tomahawk area. Many memories were made along the way.

Joan’s family was the most important part of her life. She cherished caring for her grandchildren and was so thankful for all of the time they were able to spend together and enjoy treats from Dairy Queen.

Joan is survived by her husband, Gail; children, Susan (Scott) Peterson, David (Julie) Stenbroten and Dale (Julie Johnson) Stenbroten; four grandchildren, Taylor (Adam Flory) Stenbroten, Sam (Mark Hauptfleisch) Stenbroten, Jesse Stenbroten and Lilly Stenbroten; step-son, Von Serig; three step-daughters, Bridget (Kate Karels) Serig, Cindy Serig and Amy Serig; and sister-in-law, Lila Stenbroten. She was preceded in death by her parents; former husband, Olin Stenbroten; brother, Larry Wyss; and infant daughter, Diane Stenbroten.

A celebration of life will be held at the AMERICAN LEGION POST NO. 534, 4911 Burma Road, McFarland, from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 23, 2025.

Memorials may be made to the family to be designated to a memorial at a later date.

Our hearts are incredibly sad but we know “a heart that's been broken is a heart that’s been loved.”  Thank you Mom!
