William Faris

Obituary
STOUGHTON - William Paul Faris, born in Madison, Wisconsin, on December 13, 1947, completed the ‘earthly connection’ of his journey on March 14, 2025. His legacy and life were defined by expansive knowledge, strong will, and success through an unmatched dedication to hard work and regimented attention to detail. Bill's resilience and spirit were a testament to his character, inspiring all who knew him.
Bill spent much of his youth visiting his grandparents' farm near the Merrimac Ferry, which borders Sauk and Columbia counties. It was likely here that Bill developed his classic Wisconsin grit and a love for machinery, repairing everything from small engines to cars and tractors.
After his education in Madison, he spent most of his professional career working for Oscar Mayer, spearheading the maintenance and repair of the factory and its multiple house-sized steam-generating boilers, hot water systems, ammonia refrigeration compressors, and assembly line systems. A highlight every year was participating in their annual Sweeper Employee Bowling Tournament, where his loaded team was always a perennial favorite.
After 35 years with Oscar Mayer, Bill transitioned to a position with Ideal Manufacturing, managing the assembly of circuit boards and assisting in the engineering, design, and assembly of complex packaging machinery. He enjoyed this work, formed lasting friendships, and positively impacted production, profitability, and working conditions. His dedication and hard work were instrumental in the company's success, and his influence will be felt for years to come.
Bill's life was a vibrant tapestry of diverse interests and passions that were always evident. He was an avid motorcyclist, power boater, skier, cook, and even sailor - the latter inspired by his wife, Cathy, who likely convinced him to trade his GSXR1100 and Correct Craft Ski Boat for a sailboat. His musical tastes were diverse and eclectic, blending classical composers like Tchaikovsky and Wagner with rock legends like Ozzy, Wakeman, and even Metallica, embodying his potent spirit. A devoted Wisconsin sports fan, Bill watched every Badger, Packer, and Brewer game he could. He enjoyed independence and indulged in sourdough bread, chocolate custard, and some particularly horrible-smelling Brick and Limburger cheeses, reinforcing his status as an authentic OG Wisconsinite.
Bill's life took a poignant turn when his beloved wife, Cathy, passed away unexpectedly just under a year ago. The journey of loss weighed heavily on Bill, but deepened his appreciation for their life together. Cathy's spirit and support had a lasting impact, helping him navigate illness and ultimately transforming him into a more loving person. Her devotion to him was profound. Now, after a recent fall, he is reunited with her, embracing her spirit again. Bill is survived by his three children, Angie, Jean, and Billy; his younger brother Jim; many grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, all of whom will miss him.
He chose where he and Cathy would rest, overlooking the beautiful woods and farmland of Rockdale, Wisconsin, with her Norwegian relatives. This spring, a private graveside ceremony for immediate family will be held, honoring a man whose intelligence, accomplishments, humor, and generosity will continue to live on through us.
