Obituary

MADISON - Darlene Austin, age 64, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Monday, February 24, 2025. She was born on March 28, 1960, the daughter of Joseph and Ottilia (Ripp) Austin in Black Earth, Wis.


Darlene graduated from Wisconsin Heights High School in 1978. She retired after 35 years of service from the University Hospital as a pediatric oncology nurse.


Darlene was a very caring, loving and kind person. She loved her dog, Sage, a golden lab. She found out Sage was blind and they had a very special bond. Sage was treated like a queen, from having an abundance of toys to the best food. They were inseparable including riding in the front seat of her car for trips to the farm.


Darlene was a loving soul, always remembering people’s birthdays and their special occasions.  She loved attending family parties and took many pictures over the years. She spoiled her nieces and nephews and was proud of their accomplishments.


Darlene is survived by her siblings, Don (Susan) Austin, Mary Kay Uselman, Patti Collins, and Raymond Austin; sister-in-law, Mary L. Austin; and many nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.


She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Michael and Rodney Austin; brothers-in-law, Don Uselman and Bennie Collins; and niece, Renee Austin.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. FRANCIS XAVIER CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2947 Thinnes St., Cross Plains, at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 7, 2025, with a luncheon to follow. A visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Friday.

Where should I start - Darlene, you were such an awesome friend for over 40 years - fun, upbeat, sincere and loyal. I have great memories of playing softball and our trips to Seattle, Warrens and the wine tour. I especially enjoyed our mani-pedi days! I will miss you terribly, but we'll be together again someday. Rest in Peace my friend!

I will always remember working with Dar at the Children's Hospital and the joy she brought to each shift. She was a caring nurse to the children and their families, and mentor to me as a nurse. Always ready with a story about Sage and a geniuine interst in others lives and needs. I hope you are resting now in eternity until we are able to catch up again.

I will remember Dar ad a sweet, loving soul. I was lucky to work with her at the Children’s Hospital. We reconnected last year at the farmer’s market where I found her selling tomatoes. Darlene was such a kind soul. She was my preceptor when I started on the Big Peds unit over 23 years ago. She lead the way for a couple of generation of nurses. You’ll be missed Darlene.
