VERONA / BLUE MOUNDS - With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Karen Mary Riek, age 79, of Blue Mounds, on Tuesday, February 11, 2025. She was born on May 18, 1945, in Madison, Wis., the daughter of Herman and Anita (Marty) Schmid.
Karen was a previous graduate from Verona Area High School. She later became a cosmetologist by trade.
Karen had a passion for crafting and sewing. She formerly owned her own quilt shop in Mount Horeb. She was an active and caring person who enjoyed volunteering at the local animal shelter and food pantry.
Karen is survived by her daughter, Lana Decker; two grandchildren, Hayden Decker and Ken Decker; brothers, Richard (Sue) Schmid and Randall Schmid; sister, Virginia Peterson; brother-in-law, Miles Marks; and family friend, Audra Anderson. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Adam Riek; and sister, Anna Marks.

The family is planning a celebration of life at a later date.
