Obituary

MADISON - Margaret Elizabeth McEvilly, age 82, passed away on Thursday, February 6, 2025.  She was born on February 25, 1942, in Minneapolis, Minn., the daughter of Marshall and Mary (Wade) Pickett.

Margaret graduated from DeVilbiss High School in Toledo, Ohio with the class of 1960, and went on to receive her bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green State University. She began her career as an accountant in Cincinnati, Ohio.  After a few years in Cincinnati, Peggy decided to relocate to San Francisco, so she packed up her VW Bug with her worldly possessions and camped her way across the country on an adventure to her new home.  Peggy spent the rest of her working years in San Francisco, where she made life-long friendships, took advantage of all the city had to offer and was a gracious host for out-of-town guests.  After retirement, Peggy moved to the Madison area to be closer to her family.

Peggy was very active in Alcoholics Anonymous and was proud of her 40+ years of sobriety.  She was also a former member of Plymouth United Church of Christ. Peggy freely spoke her mind, had a good sense of humor, and was always eager to talk about politics.  In her free time, she enjoyed traveling and journeyed to such places as China, Istanbul, and Africa. Peggy also went on numerous cruises. She liked being part of tour groups that educated travelers on the history of the cities and countries they were visiting. She then enjoyed telling family and friends of her travels and stories.  Peggy was also an avid reader of both fiction and non-fiction books and enjoyed listening to music. She had season tickets to the Madison Symphony Orchestra, which she attended with her sister and brother-in-law.  Music therapy became a focal point and something she looked forward to these past several months as she struggled with dementia.

Peggy is survived by her sister, Nancy (Dick) Schultz; nieces, Jennifer (Tom) Hanser and Kristine (Steve) Iida, along with other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.
