Barbara "Barb" Ashley

MADISON, Wis. – Barbara “Barb” Ashley, age 79, of Monona, Wis., passed away on October 24, 2026, following a long illness. She was born on February 8, 1947, in Viroqua, Wis., to Leland Clair Zitzner and Thelma June (Hauge) Zitzner.

On July 23, 1966, Barb married Joseph Ashley. Together, they welcomed their only daughter, Cherene (Ashley) Miles. The couple later divorced.

Barb was a loving mother, proud grandmother to Alyssa, Matthew, Amanda and Cameron; and cherished great-grandmother to Nicolia and Kyleigh Marin, and Shane and Ethan Lowrey. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Greg Zitzner: daughter, Cherene Miles; and longtime companions, David Croft and Leslie M. Mork.

Barb found happiness in life’s simple pleasures, especially cooking, baking, and spending time with those around her. She loved playing Euchre and was very skilled at Scrabble. She shared her love of cooking through her work at the Green Lantern Restaurant.

Barb loved life and treasured the many special friendships she formed over the years. Her memory will live on through her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family, and many dear friends. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

A celebration of life honoring Barb will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Friday, November 6, 2026.
