Obituary

MADISON - Thomas Anthony Kozlovsky, 91, formerly of Madison, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2025, at Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg, WI. He is survived by his siblings, William P. Kozlovsky, Daniel Kozlovsky and Mary (Kozlovsky) Zahn; sister-in-law, Donna Kozlovsky; his nieces and nephews, Susan (Kozlovsky) Husk, William J. Kozlovsky, Patricia Kozlovsky, Janette (Kozlovsky) Blee, Kaela Kozlovsky Bernal, Tanya (Zahn) Schultz, Natasha Zahn, Celeste (Kozlovsky) Wawrzyniak, Anton Kozlovsky and Dedaimia Kozlovsky, and their families, which include 14 grandnieces and nephews and one great-grandnephew.  He was preceded in death by his parents, William Kozlovsky and Margaret (Kennedy) Kozlovsky; brother, James Kozlovsky; and sister-in-law, Yvonne (Huot) Kozlovsky.

Tom (or Uncle Tom to his family) was born in Antigo, WI, on January 16, 1934. He grew up in Wausau, attended St. James Catholic grade school and graduated from Wausau High School in 1953.

After graduating high school, Tom worked for the State of Wisconsin as a Tax Assessor for 25 years.  In addition to his full-time job, he spent many happy days working on his brother, Jim’s, Christmas tree farms in various parts of Wisconsin. He also helped brothers Dan and Jim build houses on their beautiful Wisconsin farms.

Uncle Tom was a dedicated birder and hiker who had a great appreciation for nature. He was always up for an outdoor adventure and passed on his love of the outdoors to all who knew him, especially his nieces and nephews.  The family fondly remembers hiking and having picnics with Uncle Tom at the Eau Claire Dells, Rib Mountain and many other beautiful parks around the country.

Once he retired, Tom wintered in Hawaii, thoroughly appreciating the aloha spirit and wonderful weather on Kauai, Maui and the Big Island. He enjoyed snorkeling and swimming, as well as watching spectacular sunsets at the beach. He also had many opportunities to share these beautiful places with family and friends over the years.

Tom was active in many community groups and activities such as WORT radio and the Solidarity Singalong, singing at the Capitol building in Madison every Friday until just a few weeks before he passed away.  He believed strongly in the rights of workers and was an avid letter writer to publications throughout Wisconsin, expressing his political views and helping others understand a different perspective.

Although he will be missed dearly, he will be remembered for his warm smile, his birding prowess, his positive outlook on life, and his love of family, friends, picnics, cookies and nature.

A special thanks to the staff at Oak Park of Nakoma, Agrace Hospice and the two caregivers who made Uncle Tom’s last days happy ones. Their loving care, support and kindness will be remembered forever by his family and friends.

A celebration of life will be held at MARSHALL PARK (shelter by the lake), 2101 Allen Blvd., Madison, from 12 noon until 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2025.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made in Tom’s honor to Agrace Hospice.

When I was 20 years old Tom hired me at the Wisconsin Department of Revenue. We worked in refund research trying manually to get refunds to taxpayers. He is responsible for my 35 years there. Quire the character Tom was always a positive and happy person. I have many fond memories of Tom! I am so sorry for the loss of your loved one. God bless

Tom was a dedicated trade unionist and member of AFSCME Retirees Subchapter 52 in Madison. I walked the picket line with him in the historic 15 day Wisconsin State Employee Strike in July,1977. He was always in the fight for worker justice, and did not back down on issues important to working people. I was honored to know him. His courage, kindness and solidarity will be missed. May his name be a blessing. Peace, Ron Kent, AFSCME Education Representative(ret.)

It was always a pleasure to run into Tom on the birding trail. We shared many birding trips - a special sighting of a Prothonotary Warbler, a Prairie Warbler, a White-eyed Vireo, I'll think about Tom when spring migration comes around. I've sent a donation to Agrace in his memory.

Tom was such a kind neighbor; within a month of us moving into the our new house just 2 doors down from him, Tom brought us a container of fresh picked raspberries from his backyard. He continued to do so every summer and as our family grew our young daughters loved to put those raspberries on their fingers as they eagerly gobbled them up. We shared his rhubarb harvest and always reciprocated with a raspberry crisp during the warm summer months. Every day we would see Tom in his bright red coat going for a neighborhood walk, visiting both Lake Mendota and Kettle Pond. His gentle nature inspired us to look after the native birds in our neighborhood and think more critically about our food systems, driving us to seek a membership at the local Co-Op.We are so very lucky to have known Tom these past 9 years, his presence in our neighborhood will be dearly missed.
