Obituary

MADISON - Mark W. Meier passed away at UW Hospital on January 18, 2025. He was born on February 24, 1959, to Clifford “Bucky” and Barbara “Jeanie” (Armstrong) Meier.

Mark had a life centered on sports. He loved fishing and hunting, often with his dad whom he was very close to. In his very young years, he became an avid Packers fan and was hooked when they won back-to-back Super Bowls in '67 and '68. When the Milwaukee Bucks came into existence, he was all in. He ultimately became a YMCA youth football coach and a basketball and football referee, which encompassed the last two decades of his life. He ref'd his last games in November. He also enjoyed playing golf.

Mark graduated from La Follette High School in 1977. While there he participated in the gymnastics program with good success. He went on to school at MATC and the UW.

His work life included a sign business he owned; he was a licensed Realtor for 26 years, drove for Badger Cab until they went out of business and the refereeing of basketball and football. He also sold oil for Cen-pe-co and loved driving the country roads "farming" his oil sales. He worked on his own schedule, never wanting to be stuck in a 9-5 life.

Mark was a list maker, and he left a list of the people who had shaped his life: Gene and Kathy Baal, Tom Sisulak, Karen Freeding, Rick Amdahl, Trudy Martinez, Brian McGettigen, Jim Quigley, Dr. Ron Royster, Dr. Robert Kruz and Larry Bayer. He loved all animals and cherished the family dogs.

Mark is survived by his mother; sisters, Kim and Deborah (Greg Faust); niece, Kayla Lisitsa (Eugene); and nephew, Ryan Faust (Carolyn) and their daughters. He was preceded in death by his father; and his former companion, Trudy Martinez.

A celebration of his life will be held at THE EAST SIDE CLUB, 3735 Monona Drive, Madison, from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Friday, January 31, 2025, with a time of remembrance at 2:15 p.m.

We will miss Mark and his humor. We have been friends since gymnastics. We have worked together on many things. He was always a laugh! I enjoyed hunting with him and his Dad at our different properties. We both will truly miss him. God's blessings for him and all the family. Dean and Karen Gehri

I only knew Mark through LaFollette passing in the halls, primarily, and seeing him in gymnastics. I was always impressed by him and his skills in the rings. It was nice to see him for the first time, I believe, at our 40th reunionion... it was the 1st time he and I shared a conversation. I'd enjoyed meeting him again and having a chance to get to know him. My condolences to the family and friends who knew him well.

I first met Mark at Allis school when we were both very young. Growing up down by Monona Drive, I would now and then wander up to the water tower. Amongst others, Mark would always be there ready to have fun. This continued throughout all of our school years. The last time I saw Mark was about a year ago at the YMCA. As always, Mark was smiling and ready to joke. Mark will be missed by everyone who knew him. A credit to the class of 77. Jeff G.

I always remember Mark coming to the house asking my dad Gene about car repairs and oil. Mark was also good friends with my brother Keith. They were on the LaFollette gymnastics team together and were also both in real estate. I hope that Mark is up in heaven with my parents and brother. Diane Baal
