Obituary
MADISON - Stephan R. Disch, age 74, passed away at his Madison home on Thursday, January 9, 2025. He is survived by his son, Jonathan (Xochitl) and grandson, Jack all of San Diego, Calif. He is also survived by his sister, Mona (Dave) of Madison; several nephews, nieces and many cousins; his former wife, Patricia of Ashland, Wis.; and special friends, Gary, Jim and Monica. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Mavis Disch; and a sister, Sandy.
Steve was born on November 1, 1950. He was a lifelong resident of Madison. He graduated from La Follette High School in 1969, married Patricia in 1969, and their son, Jonathan, was born in 1969.
Steve worked briefly for Madison Kipp and then for Oscar Mayer from 1970 until 1999. While at OM he was also proud to serve as a union steward. Knowing that he wanted to continue working after he could retire from Oscar Mayer, he entered the nursing program at MATC in 1997 and worked full time at Oscar Mayer while he took classes at MATC. He graduated with top honors in 1999, left Oscar Mayer and immediately began working for a skilled care nursing home run by Meriter Hospital. In six months, he was made nursing supervisor over the skilled care facility as well as the assisted living and independent living facilities campus in the heart of Madison’s downtown. The people skills he had developed while a union steward served him well as a nurse supervisor. He finished up his nursing career in the UnityPoint Health-Meriter Child and Adolescent Psychiatry department serving patients there. He was well respected by his colleagues.
Steve loved hunting, supported Ducks Unlimited, and played sports but was plagued with injuries. He gave up downhill skiing and playing basketball and instead watched football players take the hits. He especially followed the Packers and truly enjoyed golf, playing the game his whole life and on courses all over the United States. Steve loved retirement and was especially happy to fly off to San Diego to spend time with Jon, Xochitl and Jack. He was a super grandpa.
