Obituary

MIDDLETON - Frederick Allen Behrend, age 79, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2025, at William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital.

Fred was born on April 15, 1945, in Madison, Wis., the son of Phillip Behrend Sr. and Magdalene (Rohde) Behrend. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend who will be deeply missed by all that knew him.

Fred grew up in Madison, Wis., and graduated from West High School. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in May 1962 and served until April 30, 1965. Upon his return, he met and married Mary (Kolb) Behrend on August 19, 1967. Fred owned and operated Hilldale Printing in Madison, for over 40 years. You could often find him and his buddies hanging out there and enjoying food and drinks after work. He worked hard but also took time to enjoy fishing, golfing, driving the boat for everyone to enjoy up North and going on vacations. He and Mary took many trips to Hawaii and Las Vegas with friends and later spent several months a year in Fort Myers Beach, Fla.  When not working or in Florida, you could find Freddy laughing and spending time at Paul’s Neighborhood Bar with friends and maybe enjoying a Miller Lite. Fred was a great friend to all and will be remembered laughing and being close to the ones he loved.

Fred is survived by his daughter, Tanya (Andy) Cole; two grandsons, Landon Cole and Jack Otterson; two brothers, Phillip (Kathy) Behrend Jr. and Robert Behrend; a special nephew, Marc Behrend; and many other nieces and nephews and friends who loved him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Behrend; two sons, Corey Behrend and Daniel Behrend; two aunts, Lucille Behrend and Mary Behrend; and his parents, Phillip Sr. and Magdalene Behrend.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.  Memorials may be made to the VA Hospital or an organization of your choice. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Fred was a fellow classmate at West High. We shared a lot of fun times in the Hoyt neighborhood. He remained a friend after high school. We lost close contact as life went on and we went on to raise our families. It seemed the Good Neighbor Festival was the place we always ran into each other. It is nice to see he still had his great smile.

Sorry to hear about Fred Passing. Fred was at Hilldale Printing and I was at The Printing Place in Middleton. Even though we were competitors, we would work together and help each other. I have many good memories of Fred and Robbie in the 80s and 90s. Fred was a good guy with many friends. With Prayer and Sympathy. Scott Hottmann

I am Fred Mills - I worked for Advertisers Press and got to know Fred and made deliveries there as well other work related stuff. He cracked me up every time with something but we talked about the days before and stories of drinking days and we crossed paths many times before. I really liked his pop machine at the shop and that's all I am going to say about that - if you know - you know! He was a great fun loving kind of guy. He will be missed because you just don't find many like him anymore. Rest In Peace :(
