Obituary

MADISON - Mark E. Saunders, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2025, in Madison, Wis., at the age of 75. Born on April 21, 1949, in Beaver Dam, Wis., Mark was a man of great spirit and gentle heart who lived a life full of adventure and joy.

Mark graduated from Wayland Academy, class of 1967, where he enjoyed playing basketball and golf, two sports he continued playing throughout his life. He furthered his education at Lawrence University before graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1972. Mark's professional journey as a Financial Investor at Harbour Investments was marked by the same integrity and dedication he applied to every aspect of his life.

An independent soul with an easygoing nature and a sharp sense of humor, Mark was a man of few words, but when he spoke, everyone listened. His presence was a comfort to many, and his ability to listen was as cherished as his insightful advice.

An avid lover of the outdoors, Mark found peace and exhilaration in biking, hiking, sailing, and playing golf. His adventurous spirit led him to sail through the Caribbean with friends, live in Mexico, and take a free-spirited path through life that he cherished every minute of. Mark's love for live music was well-known, and he could often be found soaking in the sounds of bands at local parks, music festivals, and his favorite spot, the Harmony Bar.

Mark’s commitment to his community was unwavering. He served on the board for the Willy St. Co-Op and supported the Atwood community Center, the Will-Mar Neighborhood Center, the Goodman Center and several others. Mark actively participated in the Hash House Harriers weekly “fun runs” for over 30 years! He also enjoyed riding with the Wednesday Night Bike Group and scow racing with the Mendota Yacht Club. His gentle, spirited nature made him an invaluable member of each organization.

Mark's love for his family was evident for his six siblings, Jack (Sandra) Saunders, Jane (Gary Goll) Schmidt, Karen (Dan) Fix, Tim (Pat) Saunders, Fred (Karen Flitz) Saunders and Janell Saunders. He was a beloved uncle to his six nieces and nephews and a great-uncle to his five great-nieces and a great-nephew.  Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Mary (Gianelli) Saunders; and his brother-in-law, William Schmidt.

A celebration of life will be held at the HARMONY BAR, 2201 Atwood Ave., Madison from 12 noon until 3 p.m. on Sunday, January 19, 2025.

Mark and I traveled to Mexico together several times, we biked together, and took a long trip to Thailand the year before the huge tsunami . We enjoyed the Cuates Cuetes restaurant in Puerto Vallarta, which faces the western setting sun. He also enjoyed the evening music thereabouts. In all our time together we never had a bad moment. I am missing him very much. He lived for many years 1.5 blocks from me in Madison. I often saw him 4 or 5 times a week. This is a huge loss. Dave

Sending our condolences to Mark's family. We are sorry for your loss. Mark was a good friend; we had many fun times enjoying American Players theater events. Picnics before hand and enjoying the late ride back to Madison. This was an annual event for many years. Mark and Dave also traveled to Brazil. They had great times there- so much so they forgot to come home. Back in Madison friends were wondering where they were. Getting a phone call desperately asking me to get them on a flight back to the US!! Many of Mark's birthdays shared with him after family events with him enjoying his favorite - cherry pie in celebration. And watching football games together after Thanksgiving desserts! Mark invited Dave and I to dance parties every New years eve- where we all had fun. Bing a Bong, at Pam and Mike's home, and Karaoke times at the High Noon.. Mark was always in high spirits, and such a great friend to be with.. We all enjoyed being together at pot lucks or dinners after WNB rides. Mark helped at the Beer and Stout contest, and we all enjoyed the fun of the event and selecting the winners! What a wonderful person, and he enriched our lives so very much- and so many others. He is missed, and will be so much missed. Rest in Peace good friend. RIP. Mary Strope and Dave Mitchell

My sincere condolences to Mark's family. So sorry to learn of his passing. I really wish I had gotten to know him a whole lot better - beyond the Saunders' reunions of the 60's. May he rest in peace. - Cousin Gary, Danby, VT

Sending love and condolences to family and friends. You will be forever on my mind at all the outdoor neighborhood festivals. Grateful to share so many a Saturday morning playing "buckets". City league games and after game festivities are cherished memories.
