MADISON - Dora Schindler Brand passed away peacefully on January 2, 2025, at Attic Angel Community in Middleton. She was born in Madison, Wis., on January 23, 1934, the daughter of Dr. John and Dorothea (Rickaby) Schindler. Dora loved Southern Wisconsin and spent her entire life there.


Dora married Nathan Francis Brand on December 20, 1958.  Nathan predeceased her in death in 2019. Dora leaves behind three children, Nathan (Ana) Brand, Dorothea (Robert) Kennedy and Barbara Brand.  She also leaves behind one grandson, Peter Kennedy; four granddaughters, Elena and Neeve Kennedy, and Dorothea and Josefina Brand; and one great-grandson, Liam Kennedy.


At Dora's request, there will be no funeral. Dora will be laid to rest at the Schindler plot at the Swiss Reformed Cemetery in New Glarus.


Dora's family would like to thank the wonderful and caring staffs at Attic Angel and Agrace Hospice Care and dear friends, Kati and Mia Martin.  If you wish to make a memorial, Dora would appreciate donations be made to any of the numerous organizations and groups that provide care, work, and recreation to persons with disabilities.  One near to her heart was: Community Work Services, 1402 Greenway Cross, Suite 200, Madison, WI  53713.

A really great lady. Nate Sr was a friend and business associate of my late father George Hansen, and I grew up seeing Mr and Mrs Brand often. I hope that their family has all the support and blessings they can use and more and I add my own prayers too.

Dora and I taught Dr at Crestwood in the 60s. I loved her as a a friend. She was a classy lady. I was Dottie’s piano teacher. When I was pregnant with my first child, Dora loaned me her maternity clothes! I had never had such lovely clothes, including English wool top, etc. Nate really brought my husband Ron into the First Wisconsin bank family. We became good friends as couples. I miss them both. Dora and I lived at Ann Rmorey during college years. She and Nate, Lester and I,often double dated, evenually marrying . We kept in touch for many years.she was a friend indeed. JoAnn Six

Dora was a great friend to my mother, Erna Stevens, who lived in Madison from 1988 until her own death at age 93 in 2011. They enjoyed many local jaunts together - Dora always at the wheel because Erna didn't drive. My wife Meg and I met Dora on many occasions during the first decade of this century because of their friendship. Starting in the 1970's, after years of being a knitter and seamstress, Erna became an avid quilter, eventually creating about 100, hand-sewn, quilts. Dora loved them and eventually purchased many of Erna's quilts (9 sticks in my mind...). Those quilts created a tangible and lasting bond between Dora and Erna. My mom valued their friendship very much - Dora was an important person during the last 10 or 15 years of Erna's life. I suppose that your family still has many, or all, of those quilts. I hope they continue to bring joy, warmth and memories for years to come. John Stevens Madison, WI

My sincere sympathy to Dora's family. I was a classmate of Dora's all through school. We had a lot of good times when kids at the East School and in Brownies and playing in her backyard (and in and around the hospital across the street!) and at my house where she loved my feather bed and my pet rabbit, these were the good old days. Dora was a beautiful and kindhearted person and will be missed.
