MADISON - Susan Alyce “Sue” (Nelson) Smith, age 82, of Madison, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at Brookdale Senior Living.
She was born on February 9, 1944, in Berlin, Wis., the daughter of Lloyd Nelson and Alyce (Dain) Nelson. Sue earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from UW-Madison in 1984. She devoted 25 years of compassionate care to her patients at St. Mary’s Hospital until her retirement in 2009.
Sue found joy in traveling, getting lost in a good book, sharing a good glass of wine and cheering on the Packers, Badgers and Brewers. She cherished spending time with her family and found great joy in the companionship of her many beloved cats and dogs.
Sue is survived by her children, Paul (Liz) Alexander, Sean (Gina Leach) Smith and Nicole (Rick) Mitchell; grandchildren. Clairissa Alexander, Tori Alexander and Logan (Matt) Derheimer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Alyce Nelson.
A private celebration of Sue’s life will be held at a later date. Sue’s quick wit, kind heart, and warm smile will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
