Obituary

MADISON - Margaret “Kristine” Cox, age 80, of Madison, passed away on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, at her home. She was born on September 5, 1944, in Brunswick, ME, the daughter of John Jennings and Margaret Kristina (Svedlund) Cox.

Kristine completed a Bachelor’s at the University of Colorado in 1966 and a Master of Science at Bank Street College of Education in 1973. She loved her work as a teacher, including a year at a small remote schoolhouse in Talkeetna, AK, and several years in the Jefferson County Public Schools system in Denver, CO. There, she helped develop an innovative parent-teacher directed experiential learning program. In 1975 she published Silent Wings, a handbook for teaching elementary aerodynamics. Kristine then moved to California, attending the University of San Francisco to earn a Master of Arts in Counselling in 1988. She enjoyed many years as a marriage and family therapist in Sonoma County, CA. She was a member of the American Association for Christian Counsellors. Dedicated to her work, Kristine founded and directed the Becomers Program for Women in Recovery from Sexual Abuse between 1994 and 2004. In her free time, she enjoyed playing worship music in Christian outreach activities, singing and playing the piano, autoharp and guitar. She volunteered for local food pantries, visited homeless shelters, played music at San Quentin Prison and devoted herself to serve the underserved in the greater San Francisco Bay area.

Kristine cherished her family. After retiring in 2011, she cared for her ailing father John J. Cox before his death. She relocated to the Midwest in 2016, where she could be closer to her daughter Julia. She enjoyed being a grandma to her two grandsons, Orion and Tycho Sturm. She spent the final years of her life playing, teaching and loving them as only a grandmother can.

Margaret is survived by her daughter, Julia Berian; grandsons, Orion and Tycho Sturm; her brothers, Charles, John and Peter Cox; other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Margaret “Maggie” Cox and father, John Jennings Cox.

Her daughter, Julia, would like to thank Dr. Ryan Spencer and the Gynecology-Oncology group at UW-Madison, the care team at Agrace Hospice, and family members John Cox and Brian Cox for their unwavering love and support for Kristine over the years.

A funeral service will be held at GUNDERSON FITCHBURG FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 2950 Chapel Valley Road, Fitchburg, at 10:30 am on Saturday, January 11th, 2025. Burial will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9:30 until the time of the service.

Kristine was a friend to our whole family. When I turned 50 she organized a surprise party for me even inviting my family in So Cal. They all came up including my mother which was so meaningful. God bless her memory and her family. From Emy Springle

Aunt Kristine is one of the most kind and loving people I’ve ever met. I’m so fortunate to have been her niece and experienced her love. She gave me a cousin who is one of my best friends; Julia has shared many of my most precious and most fun memories and I know we have many more to share. There are no words to memorialize this Dear Lady. I’ll miss you, Aunt Kristine
