MADISON - Corinne Stoddard, age 94, of Madison, passed away on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at Capitol Lakes Assisted Living. She was born on February 21, 1930, in South Bend, Indiana, the daughter of Clifford and Florence Davies.


Corinne was an adventurer and a life-long learner who cared deeply about the people in her life. Right after graduating from high school (St. Joseph High School in South Bend) she embarked on travels with her friends, particularly relishing their adventures in Cuba and New York City. She married Jack Stoddard in 1955 and they proceeded to search for an ideal city in which to live and raise a family. After trying out California, Kansas and Wisconsin, they chose to sink their roots in Madison’s Westmorland neighborhood in 1964.


Corinne and Jack raised their five children in this splendid place. She met some wonderful friends through her association with the Friends of South Madison Neighborhood Center and the League of Women Voters.  She sought to see people as unique individuals, and to that end was especially proud of her work with her friend, Marlene Cummings, on the Individual Differences program in Madison schools.  She earned an associate degree at the Madison Area Technical College. She then decided it was never too late to pursue her career passion, so she and her daughter, Catherine, earned their Bachelor of Science degrees in Nursing, graduating together in Edgewood College’s first Nursing class in 1983. She worked as a Registered Nurse at the UW Hospital and the VA Hospital, and as a visiting nurse. After retirement, she found the most fun job of her life working at the independent bookstore, Booked for Murder. For the next ten years, she met famous mystery authors, traveled to international mystery book conventions, and shared her love and knowledge of mystery books with others.


She and Jack traveled widely, enjoying memorable vacations in Canada, England, France, Italy, Ireland, Costa Rica and China, as well as numerous states in the US. Corinne was endlessly fascinated by the people she met on these journeys and in her own community. She found joy in creating artwork, working puzzles, playing cards, eating ice cream, and spending time with each of her children and grandchildren. Her spirit lives on in all of them. She will be deeply missed.


Corinne is survived by her five children, Mary Clare (Darcie Boddington) Stoddard, Catherine (Finn) Hubbard, Ellen Marie (John-Michael) Stoddard-Keyes, Martin (Julie) Stoddard and Anne Marie (Martin) Stoddard-Wheelock; her nine grandchildren, Stephen (Jenny Harding) Ferencz, Matthew (Emily Bergman) Hubbard, Karl (Melissa) Hubbard, Casey (Sophie Grallert) Keyes, Graham (Kelsey) Stoddard, Evan (Allie D'Amato) Stoddard, Brenna Stoddard, Jordan (Chelsea) Wheelock and Bailey (Mason) Wheelock-Johnson; and her five great-grandchildren, Michael, Jack and Alice Hubbard and Emma and Murphy Wheelock.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Stoddard; and granddaughter, Emily Keyes.

Corinne had quite the sparkle in her eyes. I remember playing a card game or five with her, and losing quite a few of them. She was sharp and sweet, and seemed always ready to have some fun.

Hi Martin - My deepest condolences on the loss of your mother. I lost mine 5 years ago and there are many times I forget and think I want to share something with her and then reality sets in. I expect you will have those same moments and the recurrence of grief that goes with those moments. I know it's cliché but those feeling mean she is still with you. I don't know if time will change the frequency of those remembrances for you, but it seems to taper off but never goes away. Peace does come so I hope it will for you and your siblings. It takes time. I miss working with you. John

Ellen and siblings, your mom was so nice to me all those years ago when I was a kid, and we would hang out and play in that awesome house in Westmorland.
