Obituary
MOUNT HOREB - Catherine “Kate” Walsh-Bratton peacefully passed away on December 14, 2024, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born on June 23, 1961, to William “Bill” and Marge Walsh. Raised in Cross Plains, Kate attended Saint Francis Xavier School where she was active in the 4H Club and a proud Brownie Girl Scout. She graduated from Middleton High School in 1979.
Following the Walsh family tradition, her first job was at the family hardware store, Cross Plains True Value Hardware and Appliance, which she always spoke fondly of. Kate took great pride in knowing her hardware and enjoyed spending time there whenever she could. In high school, Kate excelled in the DECA program carrying what she learned about business, plus her natural compassion for others, into her professional career. During her career, Kate made many everlasting friendships that have continued to this day. On October 4, 1980, she married the love of her life, James D. Bratton, at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church.
In 1981, Kate and Jim moved to Madison to begin the first chapter of their lives together. Their family grew as they welcomed sons, Beau, in 1982 and Cody, in 1984. Kate was the glue that bonded her family together. Being the peacekeeper, referee and disciplinarian amongst three males was nothing short of impossible, but she excelled at it.
As a young adult, Kate loved playing softball but in true Kate fashion, she unselfishly gave it up as her kids got older and required more of her time. She had a passion and love for dogs, who were always considered a part of their family. Later in life, Kate made it her mission to make sure all hummingbirds in the area were taken care of and well fed.
In 1997, they purchased the family business, Vern’s Body Shop, in Middleton. Kate’s commitment and support for the long hours Jim was putting in was unwavering. During this busy time in their lives, Kate was holding down a full-time job, shuttling kids to and from sports and activities and providing for and nurturing her teenage boys. Both her sons were involved with the family business, which closed its doors in 2023.
Kate had a passion for cars and in 2001 she completed the restoration of her 1963 Dodge Dart Convertible which she affectionately called, Hoopty. Each time prior to starting it, she would lovingly rub and pat the same spot on the dash. Hoopty became well known as she participated in many local parades over the years. You would often see Kate’s car filled with family and friends enjoying the opportunity to be a part of community events.
Kate had a love for the peaceful beauty of the stars and solar system that she shared with her family. She built a very special celestial bond with her grandson, Mason. Many evenings were spent stargazing and watching for those elusive shooting stars on the beautiful hilltop at their home near Pine Bluff.
Kate tolerated the shenanigans of Jim, her boys and their friends, and often hosted both planned (and unplanned) after hours get togethers at their Body Shop in Middleton. To say many memories were made at “the shop” would be an understatement. If only those walls could talk… Among her favorite activities was getting together with dear friends for “Exercise Club.” Their gatherings were always filled with wine, laughter and sampling new recipes with just a dusting of “exercise.”
Kate had a strong sense of empathy, always fought the good fight and had a gift for seeing the best in people. She devoted her time to assisting others and was the caretaker of her parents and older siblings when it was needed the most. Kate always advocated for who and what she believed in. Kate had a special gift for always showing care, love and compassion for others. She will be so missed by her family and dear friends.
Kate is survived by her husband, Jim; their sons, Beau (Lindsey) Bratton and Cody (Jen) Bratton; grandchildren, Keylah Buchner, Mason Bratton, Kennedy Bratton and Luella Bratton; siblings, John Walsh, Mary Jane Walsh (Ellis Berns), Michael (Beth) Walsh and Dan (Liz) Walsh; and sister-in law, Shirley Weathers. Kate was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Margaret Walsh (Isaac Linney); and brother, Bill Walsh.
Kate had a special love for and is further survived by nieces and nephews, Taylor (Josh) Pressley, Donald Bratton, Johnny (Alice) Walsh, Kyle (Camille) Soleil, Molly (Evan) Anderson, Megan Walsh, Hannah Berns, Zack (Macy Johnson) Loger, Billy Walsh, Emily Berns (Trevor Weissbart), Spencer Eklund (Kimberly Roffers), Davis (Jen) Walsh, Brett Evans and Faith (James) Mosel.
Throughout her life, Kate avoided recognition for the many contributions she rendered to the community and her family. In honor of her wishes there will be no public visitation or funeral services. In lieu of flowers, her family asks that you make a donation to your local animal shelter or pet rescue service.
May those who love us, love us, and for those that don’t love us, may God turn their hearts, and if He doesn’t turn their hearts, may he turn their ankles, so we’ll know them by their limping.
We are beyond grateful for the love she has bestowed upon us and were truly blessed to have had Kate in our lives. We will carry her love with us forever and always. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.
