MIDDLETON - Mark Nelson, age 59, passed away peacefully at home in Middleton, Wis., on Sunday, November 17, 2024. He was born on May 19, 1965, in Eau Claire, Wis., to parents, Peggy and Roger Nelson. Mark was baptized and confirmed at Lake St. Methodist Church. He married Joan Nelson on April 29, 1999, in St. Lucia.


Mark graduated from Eau Claire North High School in 1983. After high school, he earned his BBA at UW-Eau Claire in 1988. He worked at TruStage (CUNA Mutual) as an IT manager for 36 years before retiring in July of 2024.


Mark was an active and valued leader in scouting and volunteered with Troop 140 of Middleton. He served as Cub Scout Popcorn Kernel, bus driver and Boy Scout Committee Chair. He led many adventures with his sons, Evan and Alex, and the other boys including backpacking in Philmont, NM, Okpik winter camping, and Seabase sailing. Mark was an expert craftsman and helped the boys on their Eagle Scout building projects along with many remodeling and landscaping projects at home. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed hunting deer, turkey, and bear. He spent many happy days muskie fishing on Lake Winter and Madison lakes.


Mark is survived by his wife, Joan; sons, Evan and Alex; mother, Peggy (Conrad); sister, Michele Nelson; uncle, Mike Hamilton (Marilee); nephew, Jason Bennett; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Studt and Mary (Joe) Simo; brother-in-law, Gordy Stremke; nieces, Julia and Jenna Simo; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Roger (Claudia) Nelson; and grandparents, Norman (Beatrice) Nelson and Rollie (Elizabeth) Hamilton; brother-in-law, Gary Studt; and father-in-law, Gordon Stremke.


A funeral service will be held at ASBURY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 6101 University Ave., Madison, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 7, 2024, with Pastor Harold Zimmick presiding.


A celebration of life will be held at SEMINOLE TAP, 5956 Executive Drive, Fitchburg, from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 7, 2024.

Mark was such an asset to our community. He shaped the lives of many of our sons as part of Troop 140. His unexpected passing leaves a hole in our hearts. My condolences to his family and to his many friends.

My son was a Troop 140 Scout for several years while Mark was the Committee Chairman. I interacted with him a lot for about a year when I volunteered as Treasurer. During this time, I realized just how much effort it took to keep a large Scout Troop running smoothly and to provide a good experience for the kids. Mark did a great job and I felt very grateful for his efforts. I was also impressed by his calm and friendly demeanor. It is a great loss that he left us so soon. My heart goes out to his family.
