Obituary

MADISON - James Lee “Jim” Thompson, age 75, of Madison, passed away on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at his home with his beloved dog, bear, by his side. He was born on February 26, 1949, in Madison, Wis., the son of James and Dorothy (Conway) Thompson.

Jim grew up in Monona, Wis.  He went to Nichols Grade School and graduated from Monona Grove High School in 1967.  He entered the U.S. Army on May 12, 1969, and was stationed in Germany.  After his time in the service, Jim began working at Webcrafters, Inc., for many years.  He married Linda McCabe on April 8, 1978, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Madison and raised two sons, Curtiss James (CJ) and Chad.  After many years, the family sadly lost Linda to cancer.

Jim was one of the most generous men you could ever meet.  He was always ready to help anyone with his time or any resources he could offer. He was devoted to his family and was always available to help his nine brothers and sisters.

Jim was good with numbers and loved to play cards with his friend, Joe Parrinello; he even made a few trips to Las Vegas.  He liked to play poker, shoot pool, and go to local and state fairs and win the large prizes for others. Jim enjoyed golf and other sports, he played on softball leagues, both fast and slow pitch. He also enjoyed hunting with his brother and his dad and loved spending time with his dog, Bear. Jim loved to drive and had a particular knack for reading maps and traveling long distance from memory.  Jim especially loved to drive to the National Parks and out west.

James is survived by his two sons, Curtiss “CJ” Thompson and Chad Thompson; siblings, Donny Thompson, Betty Lou (Al Keup) Thompson, Rhonda (Bill) Flemming, Dale (Jean Doll) Thompson, Jerry Thompson, Barbara Reierson, Bob (Linda) Thompson, Rick Thompson and Ron Thompson; two sisters-in-law, Connie Myers and Patti Trotter; brother-in-law, Mike (Marilyn Feil) McCabe; and nieces and nephews, Kris, Kami, Steve, Darin, Dylan, Brittani, Jeremy and Chelsey. He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Thompson; his parents; and two brothers-in-law, John Reierson and Dan McCabe.

Dale, sorry to hear about “ Red Dog”. That was his nick name when he pitched on our fast pitch softball team during my first year in fast pitch league. Great guy! I never forgot about him.
