Obituary

MADISON - David Carl Sandell, passed away on Sunday, October 20, 2024. He was born in Beloit, Wis., to Milfred and Mercedes Sandell on July 12, 1939. He married Judith Shannon on April 12, 1958, and grew to a family of seven with their five children.

An avid photographer, he pursued his passion and was Chief photographer for the Capital Times Newspaper having a career with the paper for just shy of 50 years. He swallowed his share of tear gas during the campus riots of the 1960s, jostled with the national media during the presidential campaign appearances of the 1970s, dodged football players tumbling off the field at Camp Randall and caught the drama of the huge fire at Central Storage Warehouse in the early 1990s. His photographs won him numerous National and State awards including first place from the Associated Press Editor’s Choice and Wisconsin Newspaper Association. At one point in his photography ventures, he applied, and was under consideration for, the job of White House Photographer during the Carter administration.

A friend to many, and a creature of routine, you could always find him having lunch at the Laurel, fish at Fat Jacks on Fridays, and other local places around town. A comedian at heart, he would be ready with a joke or quick one-liner to get a smile or laugh (or groan) from those around him. He and Judy enjoyed many years traveling to Door County, going to concerts on the square, enjoying family gatherings, and having quiet evenings at home appreciating a nice dry gin martini. David had a love of old cars. A prized possession and hobby was restoring a beautiful blue 1966 Corvette convertible coupe. You would see a smile appear on his face upon hearing the low rumble of the engine and taking the car out for a spin with the top down. David also had a generous spirit, often taking photos and developing them for people without expecting anything in return. His presence will be missed but the memories he’s given us with his company and his camera will be cherished.

David is survived by his five children, Jayme (Greg) Frank of Madison, Tracy (Mark) Faust of Cottage Grove, Teresa (David) Dunn of Cashton, Roger (Sarah) Sandell of New Berlin and Karla (Jonas) Bock of Madison; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brothers, Dan Sandell, Dick (Judy) Sandell and Dean (Diane) Sandell; as well as many friends. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Judy Sandell; and his parents.

Per David’s wishes, a small family service will be held. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Dave Sandell was a great boss at the Cap Times Photo Department and his energetic love for photography survived many changes in technology. Dave was smart and could handle all camera advancements. He was agile and he supported his photographers, including the first women in photojournalism (Photojournalist Meg Theno loved him). A favorite memory for me is Dave always walking into the photo department with his favorite pastry and take-out coffee all fired up to see what stories the day would bring. When I saw him last year at his assisted living, he was so much the same in spirit and laughter. Apparently Dave thought the same. A few of us laughed at a Cap Times story when Dave said loudly with a huge smile, "Shiela, you haven't changed a bit!!" This is a precious memory for me. Dave was a generous soul. I will miss his sense of humor and vast knowledge of news and sports photography. I wish his family my deepest condolences.

I saw Dave often back in the 70s and 80s when we both worked in the Madison media. He was a superb photographer and a kind, humble man with a ready smile and sense of humor. Rick Fetherston
