Obituary

MADISON - Thomas James Frank, age 63, died on October 13, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer.  Tom was born on March 16, 1961, in Madison, Wis.  He was a graduate of Baraboo Senior High School, Class of 1979. Tom went on to graduate from DeVry University in Madison, Wis., with a degree in electronics.

Tom was hired by the University of Wisconsin - Madison’s Department of Horticulture in March 1982, where he worked as an Electronics Technician and User Support Specialist. Tom loved his job and was known to whistle when he walked down the halls. Tom was recognized for many accomplishments during his career, including modifying equipment for research purposes and being a member of the team that sent the first food into orbit, a potato plant which was placed aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia. Tom retired in April 2023 so that he could focus on his health.

Tom married Leah Plummer on June 15, 2014. The couple enjoyed many adventures together:  travel, concerts, and time spent with family and friends. Tom loved cooking and gardening, playing games, hiking, and boating. By all accounts, he was an excellent euchre player. Tom frequently hiked at Devil’s Lake in his hometown of Baraboo.  After he was diagnosed with cancer, Tom hiked the Grand Canyon twice, camping in a tent along the way. He began kayaking and kept his chemotherapy pump in a plastic bag so he could receive treatment while on the water.

Tom had a great smile, a witty sense of humor, and an infectious laugh. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He prepared meals for gatherings, arranged family reunions, and shared his sense of adventure with his family and friends. Tom is survived by his wife, Leah; his son, Thomas Frank; stepdaughters, Christina Diaz and Stephanie (Jared) Wallace; his grandchildren, Aiden and Becca; brother, Scott Frank; sister, Janine Frank; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Sally Frank of Baraboo.

The family is grateful for the compassionate care provided by Tom’s health team at Agrace Hospice.

I played tennis with Tom one hot summer morning before work. Unlike him, I was not very good at it and later that day I was given a tennis book. I found it in my desk. Tom always had a good attitude and was willing to help in our Department of Horticulture. I always enjoyed talking with Tom and he would always make me life. My day would get better if I interacted with Tom. His family is on my thoughts and prayers.

I am so sorry to hear of Tom’s passing. He helped me numerous times when I worked in Moore Hall. He was always willing to help and friendly and had a wonderful dry sense of humor. My heart goes out to his family. Steve Tomasko

Tom was so kind and helpful to me during his last year on the job at UW. I spent that same year in Agronomy after I stepped down as dean of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. I appreciated his prompt responses, his technical know-how, his interest in supporting the building's courtyard garden, and most importantly for his positive attitude. He'll be remembered for his good humor and kindness, and the respect with which he treated his colleagues. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, from Kate VandenBosch

I met Tom in 2009 at Amuuse camp in Saugatuck Mi. We shared many camps and weekends. He was a very upbeat camper always displaying a lot of enthusiasm and good spirit. His laugh was infectious. For many years we engaged in friendly competition over our favorite pro teams-his the Packers and mine the Lions. I looked forward to those interesting conversations. Leah and Tom attended my birthday party in 2023. At that get together he gave me a small container with the replica of the Lions attached to it. It was as thoughtful a gift as I’ve ever received. He will be greatly missed. May his soul be bound up in the bonds of eternal life and his memory ever be for a blessing. Sheldon Beck
