COTTAGE GROVE - Orville Freudenberg, age 95, of Cottage Grove, passed away on Monday, Sept. 23, 2024. He was born on Sept. 4, 1929, in Madison, the son of Walter and Frances (Schluter) Freudenberg and was baptized at Hope Lutheran Church.
Orville attended Badger School in Cottage Grove and after 6th grade began farming with his dad. In addition to farming, he worked for the Cottage Grove Township plowing snow on the county roads in the winter and grading gravel roads in the summer. In the mid-1950s, Orville started his own business, Orville Freudenberg Bulldozing, Excavating and Dragline Work. He was united in marriage to Arlene Schmidt, on Aug. 5, 1967, at Evangelical United Brethren Church, in Madison.
Orville was an early member of the Cottage Grove Historical Society and for many years volunteered at the Cottage Grove Historical Society Brat and Corn Feed. He was a member of the Land Improvement Contractor’s Association. He also served on the Church Council and Cemetery Committee at church. He enjoyed traveling and going to steam and gas shows. After retirement he liked spending his time restoring John Deer Equipment.
Orville is survived by his sister, Cecelia Parker; nieces, Lisa Terry, Lynne (Gordy) Bischel, Janet (Chris) Hughes and Valerie (Greg) Faust; nephew, Jim Beth; great-nieces, Leah Bischel, Madison Faust and Maggie Hughes; and great-nephew, Michael Hughes. He was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene; and parents, Walter and Frances.
A funeral service will be held at HOPE LUTHERAN CHURCH, 3702 County Highway AB, Mc Farland, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2024, with the Rev. Beth Schultz Byrnes presiding. Burial will take place at Hope Cottage Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday.
