COTTAGE GROVE - It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of James R. Koch. He earned his wings on Sept. 23, 2024, at the age of 76, and was a loving husband, father, poppy, great-poppy, brother, uncle and friend.
James was a pillar of strength and a beacon of love. His absence leaves a void in our hearts forever. James was born on March 30, 1948, to Roman and Verena Koch, he was the fifth of sixth children. When James lost his mother at a young age he went to live with his sister, Darlene (Donny) and her family in Deerfield, Wis., until high school. Then he moved to Monona, Wis., to live with his brother, Richard (Janet) and their family.
During high school he met the love of his life, Gale, and they married on Jan. 20, 1968. Together they were blessed with two daughters, Shanda and Brenda. James’ life was always complete when he had his grandchildren and great-grandchildren around.
Early on in his marriage James joined the U.S. Navy so he could serve his country during the Vietnam War. Once out of the Navy, he went on to work numerous jobs ending his career and retiring from TDS/CS as the V.P. of Computer Services. James and Gale went on to live their retired lives in Cottage Grove, Wis., where they called their home "their little slice of heaven."
James left behind his wife, Gale; daughters, Shanda (Adam) and Brenda (Jason); grandchildren, Austyn, Dustyn, Jacob, and Abigale; great-granddaughters, Everly and Dakota; sisters, Ramona, Kay, and Patti; numerous nieces and nephews; and lifelong friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, sister, parents-in-law, brother-in-law, and numerous friends.
James will be deeply missed by many. He always made sure everyone was taken care of first before himself and always made sure to be available to help anyone when needed. He can now rest in peace and is no longer in pain.
A celebration of life will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, 2024, with a luncheon to follow. A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday.
